You don't. Humor is the one area that you should never try to put any constraints on. I have close relatives that were wounded in Vietnam, permanently. I have lost friends to AIDs, heroin, alcoholism, gang related murder you name it. I've known women who were raped, molested as children, beaten by their lovers, and murdered. You can make fun of all of it.
Seriously, this is one stupid thing, that people act like 9/11 is off limits? Take that list above and tell me that ANY one of those things isn't as important as a singular man made disaster on 9/11?

FYI, I've laughed harder when the jokes hit closer to home. That's me though.

Comedy has never been about pleasing everyone, period, and with that in mind I have no problem with you saying something when someone isn't funny, or burns you a bit. What I have a problem with is the censorship that goes along with it. Notice that OP is banned?

You don't have to respond to those scenarios directly, I'm trying to address context I guess, and respecting the sensitivity of others.

Where do you draw that line, if at all? To me it just seems absurd for people to claim that they never draw the line. Maybe I'm wrong.

I wouldn't apologize for the joke, but I would say I'm sorry that 9/11 jokes offend you. There's a huge difference there. It's not subtle, I'm basically saying that I'm sorry that you have limits. This is the same with jokes based on race or sex, or politics etc. All of it should be up for grabs.

See, you're framing the question in terms that make it inappropriate to respond without grandstanding, which is lame. Because it will always be inappropriate to tell black people jokes with the word n*gger in them, that, in no terms makes it right. Turn this around, walk up to a bunch of KKK members and tell them that under the gowns, they're wearing panty hose, and unless you have back up, or police standing right there, I doubt most people would. It's the same threat of violence and inappropriate reaction to being teased that happens in both cases.
Violence and War are funny, but the violent and war like have the least amount of humor about life in general. Look at the reaction people have, "well if it's not directly related to my family, or enough time has passed, (black plague jokes) then it's funny."

Comedy should render all of us equal, but still people claim their suffering is greater than yours.

thats a tough call man. i have a friend from africa who calls his friends (and me) nigga. i know its not "er" and there are various connotations with different spellings of the word. it has to be taken in context. black guys like chicken and grape cool aid jokes are funny. white guys cant dance or jump, also funny

Right, I think context is very important, as is intent.

Yeah you're reading it wrong, I'm saying that no matter what it should always be OK to joke around, but that in the case of some crips in LA or some rednecks in Alabama, it's probably not the wisest thing to do, to walk up and tell jokes on race to the gangbangers or jokes about hillbilly incest to the rednecks etc. That's not a matter of choice, but a matter of simple safety. Internet tough guys, on the other hand are fair game.

If you think that's pussy etc. then you really truly don't get it. Violence and violent people are lame, no matter what and deserve to be made fun of. I'm not saying I haven't been that violent guy, (unfortunately) but really, being able to laugh at yourself is IMO almost something of deathly importance. It's people that take everything way too seriously that fuck this world right up, it's definitely not because of some off color joke!
