When I launch Ableton I could care less about what Charlie May said and I could care less about a difference in sound that I need some special machine to see.

If that's your gig than fine, use different software or bounce to logic or whatever the hell it is you or Charlie May wants to do. Problem solved, move on, have fun, make money, whatever your gig is.

I never participate in these conversations because I have absolutely no idea what is being discussed and to me they are dull. I was a noob in 2002, I'm still a noob in 2009 and that's the way I like it. As such I could give a rats ass what Charlie May says about the summing engine.

There's a certain liberating feeling in that.

Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams" was recorded on a four track recorder.

I have stems here from a very recent PT HD project from a known band who once was pioneering electronic pop music and had an absolutely amazing sound while still working with 12 bit samplers...
60+ tracks summing up to a wall of - nothing.

Exercise:

A person is making a track. He/She is not entirely happy with the result so far, sound wise. Rate the following possibilities to improve the track:

a) asking a good friend about the balance of the instruments in the mix
b) listing to the mix in a different location and making notes
c) wait for some days and rethink the usage of effects and the EQing
d) improve the listening situation by moving speakers, adding damping to the walls etc..
e) replace the power cords from the computer
f) smoke a joint or stop smoking a joint while mixing
g) drinking less / more coffee / tee during mixing
h) mix in the morning and not at 2 am after a full work day.
i) discuss issues of engines in audio software.

There is this exact same "sum engine" discussion over at Logic Pro Help... about every 2 months. Or every time Pro Tools or Nuendo update something.

Waste of Space.
