how many iMacs variations are there?

if you think about it, this statement just says something like - 31 flavors are cool but they aren't all chocolate. Mmmm chocolate.
Are you comparing noise to flavours? Do you anybody who like noisy computer?

naw... how many iMacs are there really?? I mean every version/configuration of iMac by Apple (tm) ever is like what 12? 20? 30 - tops... There are probably more different configurations of PC at any mid-sized electronics store then there are total iterations of iMac... ever.

so you're comparing your (actual) iMac to 'most' (theoretical) PCs is a bit unbalanced wouldn't you say? your argument might carry more weight had you picked out PCs that are known to be quiet or comparable to iMacs and then drawn your generalization. As it is you've pretty much drawn a circle around one hemisphere and said "its in this vicinity"

They used IBM punch card systems. That's nearly a PC!

Hum... yes, you have a point  .
Then, honestly, I wonder, can anyone point me to a link to something that would be equivalent to the iMac 2009/2010, but in PC ?
I would like to know, if for example, today I had to buy a new computer for music production (not for project with 120 tracks but something correct), what choice would I have If I want to go for something easy, all in one if possible, quiet, etc ...
That's the questions hunderd of people have to face every day when choosing a computer. I had this choice one year ago and I choose a Mac, maybe I was misinformed and I would like to know what are the equivalent.

i only chose mac because of OS X....what hardware it came on is inconsequential .... i used to tinker and dig into windows for years but i found myself fucking around more with the OS tweaking than actually making music os x put the app in focus for me instead of the OS ... it got rid of the registry it got rid of bloat got rid of antiquated uninstall routines. it got rid of boxed in app windows.. it gave me expose, spotlight, drag to install and uninstall, the ability to run most programs from anywhere on the system or anywhere off the system. it gave me the option to put my OS on another drive and take it to another system and plug it in and run it without problem, it gave me core audio .. and most of all it gave me a more transparent OS to actually write music and not have to care about what the OS is doing .....

but hey use what works for you ..... OSX works for me
macbook pro 2.5 i5 os 10.12 , TC Electronik Konnekt 48, Live 9, Cubase 9, event 20/20, Waldorf Blofeld, roland tb-03, roland Jx-03, korg mikrokontrol, novation nocturn, akai lpd8

The best part of a mac is Mac os itself.
- multi client low latency audio subsystem (core audio) out of the box
- core midi (IAC Bus out of the box)
- no need to tweak the system for audio use
- stable as hell (if you dont break it yourself, which i did couple of times)
Hardware may look stylish but apple traded design for quality (screen flicker, overheating, USB bus power drain, just to name few).
As previous poster mentioned, OSX took away software pain (of couse it have some flows and bugs, but nothing is perfect you know...), macbook gave me hardwareproblems.
I had to take it apart and to drill some holes in the bottom in order to improve heat dissipation.
Coming from DOS/Windows background and typing this text on a macbook i have to say
that my next computer will be a hackintosh.
And thanks to guys from insanely mac forums it's super easy to do.

Hi There,

Just gone Mac myself (Macbook Pro 15" i7)

Have to say I'm loving it so far.

Setting up was a doddle - picked up all my internet conections straight away :)

Bought the Apogee One - Instal software and go :)

Love the trackpad finger scrolling :)

Getting used to the shortcut commands. I was a whizz on Windows so a little confused there :?

Live - Well it's working so far, which is more than i could say for my pc laptop. However haven't installed any 3rd party plugs yet and still fear the worst 8O

Really not regretting the move even after the much improved Windows 7
MacBook Pro, Mojave, Live 10, Logic Pro X, UAD Apollo & Satellites, UAD, NI Komplete, Izotope, Korg, Audio Damage, Fabfilter, Waves plugs.

agent314 wrote: For people who currently use a Mac/MacBook/Pro with OSX:
Why did you choose the machine you did?
My first mac, an ibook, was the wrong choice. Back then they were underpowered and while I loved the machine, it didn't perform well with music software. My current mac, a Mac Pro, I've had for 3 years and still have tons of power, I don't see replacing this machine for a long time yet still.
agent314 wrote: Did you come from a Windows background?
Yes, used windows all through my childhood and part way through college, then switched to mac.
agent314 wrote: If so, why did you switch? Did you prefer the Apple OS experience, or did you change for the hardware, or both?
Most of my friends used macs and were able to do things I couldn't much easier. Soon after I needed some software for school that was mac only, so I was forced in but didn't complain.
agent314 wrote: Do you find yourself limited by your choice of platform (i.e. there are things you'd like to use but that are only developed for PCs)?
Besides the larger pool of free VSTs for PC which aren't a big deal to me anyway, no I don't feel limited.
agent314 wrote: For people who use/have used both:
Do you find you have more options/limitations with one over the other?
No
agent314 wrote: I see a fair amount of software (mostly free, independently-developed stuff) that's Mac-only or PC-only - have you found one platform to have better free choices than the other?
No, I feel like there is MORE for the PC but there is a mac equivalent for everything that I have so far needed.
agent314 wrote: Have you found one platform to be more stable/reliable than the other?
Yes, I personally find Macs to be more stable. I don't have experience with windows 7 however.
agent314 wrote: Have you found one platform to have better performance than the other when comparing the same/similar hardware?
Not really. They seem close to the same to me at this moment in time.

If I may add... A tool is a tool. I personally choose Mac, but I could do everything I do now on a PC. IMO those who defend one over the other are just making excuses for their own insecurities and shortcomings using their tool of choice.

Back in the day, I was hanging out with a buddy of mine who happened to be both (a) a Mac freak and (b) totally stoned. He monologued for a good 2 hours on how sexy they were, after which I began both (a) using Macs and (b) using.

Bliss.
