My God, forge. Honestly. Before the Lounge was created, General was an absolute madhouse. There were ENORMOUS fights and name calling. It wasn't all like that, of course. Just like The Lounge isn't half the hellhole you guys want to make it out to be. I submit to you, however, that the WORST days in the Lounge simply pale by comparison to the venom that was swirling around General for sometimes months on end. If you want me to post examples - where forum regulars and the Great Old Timers - are behaving like absolute shitheels to one another and other people, I'll be glad to do so. This behaviour seemed to run in phases. There was no moderation, but it would die down somewhat, then re-emerge. Pretty soon the Lounge was created; in part to get that stuff out of General/Main.
Look youngin', some of us have been here since before 2009....
Seriously though, you may be like "WTF dude please" when I tell you this, but there really was a 'golden age of general' and what you are describing was definitely
after its decline. Of course it wasn't all a bed of roses, bliss & nirvana; There were ups and downs and disruptions and the occasional maniac (DJWILDSTYLE anyone?) - but it was just a really interesting and cool message board. The period of time you are describing was definitely the melt down period and in the end it was that very atmosphere that prompted the creation of 'the lounge'.
Ableton
had to make the lounge because the shit just got so insane that it
had to be separated - but
for years prior to that OT posts existed peacefully and in total harmony with Ableton and music geekery related posts...
Can you imagine that?
There was always the occasional purist bitching that 'this is a music forum FFS....' - but it was very manageable, there were a huge range of discussions and it really was a really inspiring little corner of the web...
Shit, there was a time when time you didn't even have to register to post, you could post as 'guest' - and shit was still manageable.
It really was a very different atmosphere. Memory lane, I know....
I guess the thing is that Ableton Live is no longer a relatively obscure, niche piece of software. It's gotten huge and so has the following - there will be no more golden age.
Ableton should have never introduced VST support in version 4...
Really though, I do think there is a lot to be said about what you wrote regarding 'nostalgia', so I am going to leave it at that.
Re: the bit about Neb -
In the interest of full disclosure: I have no problem whatsoever telling you that I think neb is a cool guy and I've got a lot of respect for him.
With that said, even if that were not the case - I wanted to point out that the bit you quoted from Neb was probably not the best example to use to illustrate your point and to be fair it would have been nice had you posted the comment that prompted his response as well - either that or dig up one of the examples that weren't prompted by racism.

Look, I accept that my dickishness did start to get out of hand the last month. Guilty as charged, okay?
OK.
Hatchet buried on my part for sure, no grudges and no ill will whatsoever toward you, all is forgiven and forgotten, lets be friends, etc. etc.
I know I've acted like a douche and written some pretty harsh things over the years myself - I used to get really snarky over political stuff, and I was a major dick to Dj Adonis over some thread about marital fidelity - we had a disagreement and I said some really uncool shit to him, both publicly and via PM, and Adonis was a really cool dude. I definitely regretted that. I apologized but I'm not sure that he forgave me.
What about the time when I trolled tone deft and got called out by Dom?
I was so pissed about that.... but in the end, though it certainly wasn't the end of the world, I had to own up to my part in the affair, and I did ---> once I realized that it was just
my own ego that was making me so angry and defensive.
Alright man, that's all I'm going to say about it, time to move on - have a good weekend!
