Maybe they can learn from NI's business model? They seem to be running a successful business while also having a free "runtime version" of Reaktor.

The free runtime, Reaktor Player, is only compatible with ensembles that NI allow. Mostly commercial. However in spirit I agree that NI have been doing things right in every way for years now.

+1 ...and NI is savvy enough to understand that. I feel a Komplete sale comin' on.

NI's "Komplete Sales" are always a sure indicator for:

• We have a new version of Komplete soon, but we don't tell you yet
• The new version will drop some of the products you already own. Not supported anymore.
• But we put some presets called "Kore instruments" into it. So it will look like a package with products more than ever

1: But you don't get ripped off. Buying the previous Komplete at 50% off + upgrading to the new Komplete = the same price if you just bought the new Komplete. So what exactly can you or anyone else complain about ?
2: This hasn't happened enough for it to be a "thing" that NI "always" do.
3: you're complaining about them including Kore Instruments in Komplete ? Why, because you don't like them ? For anyone who does like them there's great value for money to be had.

I guess different people have different limits, also not everybody is like me ... working from home wearing only facepaint and an XXL buttplug. Some people have a boss / children / a boss who is a child.

We have to make allowances for all kinds I guess. ho-hum

I'd easily plunk down $50 for a runtime. My God, I think Ableton would sell a ton of runtime versions at that price. The profit would prolly well exceed what they've made on M4L thus far.

Again, we've never had an answer for why there's not a runtime.

There's a very specific reason why the Max runtime exists and it's not necessarily about people getting free toys to play with.

It's for computer musicians (read: avant garde/academic/high art composers) who need their work to able to run on computers that don't have full Max installed so that their compositions/installations can be performed. The usual method is to carry the Max runtime on a thumb drive/CD-R or download it on to the machine you're using to run the performance. With the advent of powerful laptops the usefulness of the Max runtime is almost certainly declining.

And because a potential M4L runtime would have to run inside a licensed copy of Live anyway this original purpose of the Max runtime becomes moot in this context.

So existence of the Max runtime seems to have had a psychological effect on people to make them think that Cycling '74 was promoting some kind of quasi-open community solution for people to get cool free toys to play with when that wasn't really what it was about.

Just bought M4L with the 30% off.. loving it.. i think it's worth every dollar. The plugins alone make up for 3/4 of the price.

I think a "Player" version for Live would not canibalise sales of the full version, it would actually drive people towards it.

How many people without M4L have any idea what it can actually do?
I bet if there was a M4L Player instrument it would take people over the threshold.

Ok here's the smartest idea I ever had.

Sell two version, full and runtime. Runtime $50 or something.

Set up an "app store" platform. Buy runtime versions there. People can post free plugs or charge. If they charge, ableton and cycling skim a little off the top for themselves, the developer pockets the rest.

You sell a shit ton of runtimes, the corporate guys take some off the top, then as every lamebrain comes up with a "must-have" idea, they buy the full version and start creating m4l masterpieces.

This is a no brainer guys.
