TL;DR

This has got to be a joke. But just in case it isn't…

Windows 7 x64 Home Premium installed size = 16–20GB
(http://www.sevenforums.com/installation ... 35gbs.html)

Mountain Lion installed size = 8GB
(https://www.apple.com/osx/specs/)

I use both OSes, and can vouch for these figures. Bloated? OS X? Certainly not compared to Win7, though probably compared to any reasonable desktop flavour of Linux.

But what I want to know is this:

Why do people update their OS whenever Microsoft or Apple release one? If your music computer works with your current OS, DO NOT CHANGE it until your music software requires it, or until such time that you know all of your software is going to be compatible with the new version of the OS in question.
agree totally

I remember around 2000 when we were on windows 95/98 etc. that people said the opposite.

Only when win2k came along did windows become really solid for music.

Then there was xp and now win7 - all good:-)

It's not a joke. Windows has more features, hence the larger installer. OS X has fewer features, but more bloatware. Here are all the apps that came with my Mac that I never use:

- Automator
- Chess
- Dashboard
- DVD Player (my Mac's a friggin' Retina :x)
- FaceTime
- Font Book
- Game Center
- GarageBand
- Image Capture
- iMovie
- iPhoto
- Launchpad
- Photobooth
- Quicktime Player (doesn't play anything, utter junk)
- Stickies
- TextEdit
- Activity Monitor
- AppleScript Editor
- Audio MIDI Setup
- Bluetooth File Exchange
- Boot Camp Assistant
- ColorSync Utility
- Console
- DigitalColor Meter
- Grab
- Grapher
- Migration Assistant
- Network Utility
- RAID Utility
- Terminal
- VoiceOver Utility

hello. please tell me exactly what those 8-12GB of extra features are? i'm all ears.

btw, calling useful utilities "bloatware" just because you don't use them is daft.
