If you were thinking of going back to school for a music related endeavor, IMO, I would avoid a university (like USC) where a degree costs a small fortune. I actually just graduated from SC and in my only two years there I built up a hefty chunk of debt. Now, in my field I ultimately decided it was worth it (or I guess I am banking on it being worth it) but in something like music production I think you could actually get a pretty competitive degree at a tech school or something. That way you also will relieve a little financial pressure off yourself. I am sure the DRE program will be interesting, competitive, etc. USC wouldn't let some shit program wash through the university just because Doc has a fat wallet. But I probably wouldn't advise most people to pursue that program unless they can snag a big scholarship or happen to have a few hundred K to throw at a degree.

Agreed, if you can pursue the career of your choice without a typical college degree, then by all means do so. Unfortunately, college is the logical next step for many people coming out of highschool when in reality a lot of people don't need a four year degree for their job of choice.

That being said, being in a university environment as a young person is (imo) a highly valuable experience, beyond what you experience just within a classroom setting. Like you said, self motivated people tend to thrive without the need for a degree program, but many people aren't highly motivated right out of high school. College worked well for me, I got two degrees, had a lot of amazing experiences that I would probably never have the opportunity to do if it weren't for my college career, but it is not for everyone and definitely not a requirement for a prosperous and enjoyable career.

Music production is an excellent example (I think) where a tech-school or certification program is an ideal place to gain the skills necessary to be decent without devoting a large part of your life to a debt-ridden degree system.

The current student loan/debt empire is certainly a backwards-ass system at the moment, and sooner or late more people will start to realize the downfall of the old ways.

So mostly my (limited) attraction to this program would be to be around like-minded people who like or need the structured environment and program. “What can this old rapper teach me about a dying industry??” is the furthest from my mind. At least for me being around like minded people only on a computer screen with no shared discipline and structure just leads to distraction and procrastination, especially as I am getting up there in years.
