Windows is a classic case of a mess because of the polyphony of hardware that MS has little control over and the problems of drivers.. untill you use something like a Mac with OSX you'll see the difference. thats why people use Macs because other systems like windows and linux hardware and software issues caused by lack of control
I think MS has done a great job considering but as I said i have a PC and a Mac and I know the one that crashes and has conflicts all be it fairly rarely these days where as i just dont have that issue on the powerbook.

Noisetonepause: you seem to be making that point that Microsoft are an example of how it can be good to have a different company make the software and hardware.... most people would say that Windows is a great example of why it is a bad thing!

3rd party drivers on Windows, while they have gotten better since the days of 98 (the first version of windows that wasn't absolutely terrible IMO) are still somewhat of a liability. The most important parts here are the onboard peripherals on a laptop. If your OS can't even make proper use of the onboard ports/chips/whatever, what good is it to you? All of the windows laptops I've ever had have had serious issues with standby mode, since most drivers don't seem to handle standby very well. On my Dell Inspiron 8200 e.g., after a standby, the audio card starts stuttering and some of the other hardware plays up. On my iBook (which cost almost a third as much), I simply close the lid, and it's in standby. I can do this in the middle of using Live, then open it again a day later, and Live will playing again in an instant. I've never seen a windows laptop run that seemlessly.

Comparing a Dell to an iBook is hardly fair. It reminds me of an old joke -

Donkey meets Skoda. Donkey goes "Hi car". Skoda says "Hi donkey". Doney starts crying and says "Hey, I called you a car, you could of called me a horse".

Okay, on re-reading I understand what you're saying ... but you missed the point of what I was saying. I said Solaris and OS X work so well because 1 company makes both hw & sw and is in complete control of development.

You said "well what about windows"?

I would say "well what about windows" ?? I didn't suggest they built their own systems!

Yeah, the Dell cost me $4000 and the iBook cost me $1440! (AUD) That was the last time that I will EVER buy anything other then an LCD from Dell....

What is a fair comparison? An IBM? I've had 2 Toshibas, 1 Acer, 1 Dell and now my iBook..... all bar the Dell were in pre-XP days, so I can't give an up to date judgement of those particular brands drivers these days.
