and Machines... are you implying that the international oil interests are in competition? Do you really think that they arent working together to gouge us? Competition doesnt earn the oil companies record windfall profits, cheating the consumer does.

Of course oil companies are in competition? Do you really think they wouldn't kill each other off? That they have some sort of communistic brotherly love? Of course they work together, but certain things, like the results of seismic testing and other methods they use to determine how much, and where the oil reserves are, simply is not being covered up by an international oil cartel.
You can hide information if it's a few people who know, but when it's thousands, well.... Seriously, we in the states here get the best price per gallon for oil, and we are complaining about price gouging?
My contention is yes, we are being hoodwinked, but it's not because there is this huge supply of oil, but because we are not being given reasonable alternatives to oil, we aren't working on other methods, because the profit margin isn't there for other methods... What's interesting this way is China could be the country that designs vehicles driven by other fuel sources first, that alone could be the start of WWIII.

I'm sure you're all aware of the insane gas prices these days. If you're like me, you're sick of it. You might think there's nothing you can do, but there is. You may have already seen a similar email...

The plan is for everybody to STOP BUYING GAS FROM EXXON/MOBIL FILLING STATIONS. This is the biggest oil company and if we can all make a conscious effort to stop purchasing their fuel all at once, they will be forced to do something about it. Other companies will also be inclined to follow suit.

This should not be a major inconvenience for anybody. Simply just buy your gas at an Amoco, BP, etc. Citgo is probably the best place to go since they are the only major oil company that doesn't buy their oil from the middle east.

This could actually work folks.

The only other thing that needs to happen is for this message to get read. Please repost or email anywhere you can. IT'S THIS, OR PAY THE PRICE.

And you can get 1.8 litre diesel vans that can hold 60 litres of paint, a couple of ladders and still do 40MPG.

Unless you're off-road, no-one needs an SUV.

I've yet to see a 1.8 diesel van in the states that gets 40mpg. They simpy don't sell them here, and if they do, I'm not finding them on Craigslist. I will never feel as guilty as most americans about gas etc. i've rode the bus most of my life, it will take me at least 15 years of driving a 8 cylinder to come close to the average americans gas use.

Also, a liter is what 1/3 a gallon? I need about double that capacity. I own a fairly efficient van that does the major hauling, the SUV is for meeting the customers, and honestly, unless you've tried to mac on women in a white cargo van covered with splatters of paint, and dirty as fuck, you don't know what you're missing... girl likes you, then sees your van, then runs thinking about serial killers, meth labs and trailer homes.
It's all negative, if I drive a small car, I risk killing it, and can't carry everything. I drive another van.... kind of redundant don't you think? try to find a good station wagon? people just don't sell Suberu Outbacks used that often around here.
I'm not buying a new car, but I can't afford to risk owning only one used vehicle anymore.

believe me, living in Seattle, it's not only the gas milage that made me despise SUV's for years. They have no visibility for about four feet in front of them, dogs get killed all the time... kids etc. People feel invincible behind the wheel of one, it seems like some of the worst drivers gravitate towards them....
I spent my time thinking this out, it wasn't an easy decision, but I'm quite comfortable that I made the right choice, despite what you might believe.

Though I really wanted one of these! not that the gas milage would have been any better...

After all - we're really not buying gas as much as: "we're trying to get someplace"

I'll gladly give up my SUV when someone figures a way to beam me and all of my gear to wherever the gig is.

I can barely fit my Powerbook in the back of a Prius and the bus driver gets really pissed when I take more than one trip to board the bus.

Legalize everything - let consumption sort it out : )
