it's a different life, no doubt.
we catch sooo much shit from 'mushbrains'* for not having kids, they really don't get it.
(this is not directed at anyone here, just an observation)
*mushbrain - adults whose brains have turned to mush from having kids. occurring from
- acting like a buffoon to make a baby laugh
- being so occupied with their kids they tune out the rest of the world, affecting their driving and general manners in public
- being sooooo tired and devoid of personal time they're walking zombies
speaking of kids, I just read this
8-year-old whiz designs with FPGAs (FPGAs are programmable chips that run software.)
http://www.eetimes.com/news/latest/show ... =201202710
(yes, work is THAT slow)
your brain turns to mush as you slowly surrender your will and give up on the fight to retain any kind of self or independence
and part of that is discovering how much women suddenly feel they have you by the balls and make it their life's mission to hammer that loss of self or independence home even more until all the fight in you is gone
that is what that is all about
when you have kids you cross a line and there is no going back
but you will have some of the funniest conversations of your life with your child, and you also get an excuse to watch movies like transformers WITHOUT giving a crap about plot
and other really cool ones like "meet the robinsons" - that was a very funny movie
having kids is like crossing over into the "real world" and not to be done lightly - Neb knows what I mean - but while sometimes you maybe mourn the loss of your freedom to do what the fuck you want, you soon realise most of the shit you can no longer do was crap and a waste of time anyway and life is much more meaningful when you have kids
I dont miss the self-indulgence that I no longer have time for
yeah, that's pretty much it in a nutshell, forgy. well said.
the only thing I'd add is that if you want freedom, carve it out for yourself. What wives want more than anything is security...if my wife feels secure, she doesn't give me grief for going out, partying, hanging with friends, gigging, or making music. Of course, I make sure I get the dishes done first, but that's part of the give and take.
As for the funniest conversations ever...here's one:
My wife is allergic to cats and dogs. So Simon decides he wants a dog, but knows we can't have one in the house. At dinner, randomly, he asks, "Mom, when you die, can I get a dog?" Aaah, the logic of children....so simple, so pure...

I'm amazed that neb does as much stuff that he does, school, kid, music, playing out, job... damn overacheivers gotta chill out, making the rest of us look bad. forge you do a lot of that too, right?
as I enter mid 30s it seems to come up more and more, conversations with people who think we live on the moon and lead some weird lifestyle, I'm often told we're selfish and are making a mistake, it's weird, totally polite coworkers get all pissy over it. ultimately people always say they wouldn't trade their kids for anything, I believe that, it has to be amazing.

well, like Neb said about women and security - that is very true - for me now it's about realising that I cant be arsed with the insecure life of a musician or sound engineer so I've gone back to universityTone Deft wrote:I'm amazed that neb does as much stuff that he does, school, kid, music, playing out, job... damn overacheivers gotta chill out, making the rest of us look bad. forge you do a lot of that too, right?
it's kind of odd though, I cam here thinking I'd almost totally give up on music, but if anything what it's doing is giving more clear "real world" ideas on how I can do it - and I'm kind of aiming to teach/tutor at university level so I can still use my audio/music background
it's actually really cool being able to take the years of work experience and give it more of an academic focus
that's great! definitely in school the 'old fart' students were the better students. they came to class, kept their mouths shut, aced the classes and disappeared. I took it that they took the financial side of it all more seriously and wanted a better job ASAP. all I wanted was a beer and some boobies, school only got in the way.

RE Carrots - don't feed 'em BS, because they're way WAY smarter than you...the innocence of youth will topple the cynicism of age any day...smart kid...takes after your wife, I'm sure.
RE Making a Mistake - I'm sure you live life with no/few regrets, and feel good about your choices...most of my friend who chose not to have kids have aged a lot slower, lived well, and been happy in their decision. I often wonder why I want one more...is it biological? Is it cultural? Ultimately, I decided that after my wife and I are gone, I don't want my son to be alone in the world. Don't know if it's a good enough reason to give up a few more years of my life, but it's good enough for me.
RE Overachieving- Parenthood is the hardest job in the world. Bar none. And for me, it's also the most rewarding job. If I died right now, I might be proud of my music, or proud of my law practice, etc. etc., but nothing would top the pride I have in raising my kid. As for the other stuff...well, I just get cranky if I can't do it. So then it becomes a pissing contest between how cranky I get if I don't sleep vs. how cranky I get if I don't do music/law/etc. Usually, sleep suffer.
