not really, djs, more than anything, are paid to pick good music for the party. When someone then puts on mix cds from mixmag, then they are, essentially, stealing work from whoever did that mix.

...and anyone who produces knows how important the roll of the dj is
the dj is the one who's going to put your lame ass song on a mix cd that gets distributed by some big magazine
or charts you song
or plays it at some big party and next thing you everyone knows who you are (as a producer)
keep hating on dj's and see how far your music goes

IMO, apart from the holier-than-thou trainspotters in the crowd, all the folks want in a DJ is good music, and possibly cheerleading. Any promoter who knows his business will know that's what sells the drinks. It's what pumps out of the loudspeakers that really counts. Celebrity status helps, too. Technical skill can be more or less irrelevant.
I'd personally MUCH rather dance to a premixed compilation CD than listen to some wannabee superstar DJ wanking over his beatmatching, full-body-motion filter sweeps and EQ cuts, headphone perched betwixt ear and shoulder.
As far as the legendary Mr Hook, I say good for him. He proves just how easy it is to please a crowd DJing. It's just playing somebody else's music.

1. Doesn't seem much different than alot of the Live DJ wankery + drama to just fire off clips and act like you just laid a golden egg.
2. PH is a man with a past, like immune to laws and ridicule.

its funny how everyone is whaling on Peter Hook for being a "fake" dj. when most of us would never class him as a dj anyhow - is it really that much of a surprise?
martin gore [depeche mode] played at sonar last year. im the biggest mode fan. however, i never heard the set, but i certainly wouldnt expect the earth from him behind the decks. put him in front of a synth and he will take you to the learning tree.
what suprises me that we are on page 6 of this thread and nobody has started naming and shaming "proper" electronic producers / dj's who fake it, such Switch etc.
as djing and dj culture continues to disappear up it own arse and club crowds get smaller, be prepared for more nonsense like this - sit back and enjoy the ride.

speaking of faking it - did anybody see the program "faking it" where anne savage "tought" a classical violin player to dj in a week. she spent as much time on beat matching "training" as getting "the look" and "the gestures" right.
