This is blasphemy!!!!!. There are certain bands that you just cant talk shit about. Tool and NIN are untouchable, even though i'll admit recent nin is not as good as the old shit. I guess it comes down to musical preference but I've noticed alot of people who don't like NIN or heavy music in general tend to have low testosterone levels. You may not like it, if you don't thats probably why. I would suggest hormone replacement therapy, maybe change your diet, and hit the gym. Listen to "The Perfect Drug," while engaging in strenous physical activity and maybe you will understand the power or REZNOR!!! Also I'm a fucking biased fanboy and I over analyzed the shit out of every NIN album, so I may be biased.

I really liked year zero and and the new idea's that were apart of it. Actually speaking up about more worldly things was a good change ..and I hope that his next one will be different all together.

I never will post about a band tobe debated unless their New!

for real though ... some of those older tracks are just untouchable, like "down in it"

so, for all you that do like any type of electronic rock/industrial whatever. Who makes good stuff these days? Please don't refer me to any dancy happy disco tunes either. NIN makes good brooding dark textures with pretty good beats. Anyone done anything like Ghosts? Anyone made anything I can put on headphones and zone out to? anything in the same vein?

Most electronic music (which I love) is way too happy and dance oreintated. Then theres the Eno stuff I dig, but it can be quit boring after awhile. For everyone that has bad stuff to say about Trent that actually gives about that genre of music in the first place please turn me on to some new stuff. In sports there's always younger tougher guys that come in and do it better. Who has done that in electronic/rock/industrial whatever?

I loved Ghosts and Year Zero, didn't like With Teeth or The Slip cause they sounded like whiny post rock albums.

Yeah word, well there you go, the old shit is always gonna be better. Same shit with hip hop compare early Nas, Kool g Rap, Rakim, Organized Konfusion, Brand Nubian, Ultra magnetic emcees to 50 cent, lil wayn, and lil shit etc etc. NIN doesn't have the hate from Pretty Hate Machine up to Fragile, but it's still good shit in my opinion. As for why Trent Reznor is a big deal, I would say the innovation of coming up with that sound. When Linkin Park or any of these teeny bopper bands try to do the same it sounds like shit, they are just weak in comparison. So it's his sound, his contribution and no one can hold a candle too it. He was using early Reaktor when it was a piece of shit, experimenting with alot of sound design when it wasn't very common place.

As for the earlier comment from knotkranky about Black Flag and The Clash being heavier than Tool and NIN. They play in lowered tuning most of the time usually Drop D, and nothing compares to the heaviness of early Tool recordings, Opiate up to Aenima. Hooker with a penis has to be one of the heaviest and most powerful songs in human history. Makes me want to rip out my heart and eat it. Black flag and clash are great though.

Trent and Timbaland should make an instrumental album together.

Honestly, the ignorance in that one sentence is one of the main reasons NIN are annoying now. when I was a kid, and he first came out, it was because he took great ideas from groups I loved and watered it down into mainstream pop music. So if you can say he did one thing to innovate, it was that he did more than anybody else to water down industrial, and make it mainstream..... blah.

In the spirit of an earlier post about coming up with alternatives etc. here's Cabaret Voltaire from maybe 1978-80, ten years before NIN. Even Trent would agree he owes his left nut to these guys. Them and Throbbing Gristle came up with Industrial music and the sound, there's really no arguing that.

This is just early stuff, listen to others by them and you can hear early NIN all over the place. They started playing together in 1974.

Basically Trent took a sound that was dark and disturbing, and made it whiney. I wouldn't care, but in every interview he knocks some other group, which I find hilarious considering his initial success was based on aping other groups, and diluting their sound through a pop aesthetic.

Also, just a real obvious reason why Trent deserves to be a target of derision, he constantly rants against groups he doesn't like etc. himself, it's just stupid IMO.

All great groups, all second and third wave. TG and Cabaret Voltaire started doing basically english sex/war/death/life extremist versions of kraut rock, what we know as Industrial in 74 and 75 respectively. Those groups all came out in the early 80's. NON here in the states was the only real comparison, (75 I believe) but his stuff is more noise collage than Industrial.
I geek out on music I like, read up on it etc. did the same thing with punk and metal.
