The Equinox - cheesy fun, gateway to hell claymation/blue screen movie.
Phase Four - I'm afraid to watch this as an adult, as it could be just awful, but I remember it being really pretty fun, acid tinged monster movie about ants gaining ultimate intelligence through their hive minds.
The Brain that Wouldn't Die - I really really really HATE that you can't find this movie anywhere outside of the Mystery Science Theatre 2000 version. I like my cheesy B movies to be somber and with as much serious intent as possible, much more fun than puppets making comments.... blah.

'The Brain that Wouldn't Die' Fun sleaze, with some pretty scary mutilations; as a kid I was really surprised by them. That thing in the closet is pretty good! Too bad there are a lot of edited copies being shown, find the real deal if you can.
Mystery Science Theater 3000 can be wonderful, but I think they gave their treatment to a few films that didn't deserve it. Still, they can be really funny, & I am a fan.
I remember going to an all night sci-fi fest in San Francisco that was showing a mix of old & relatively recent films. The oldest one being shown was the original 1956 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'. A guy sitting behind me started in on his Mystery Science Theater routine, much to the annoyance of everyone within earshot. I turned around & gently suggested that he actually watch the film as it was a classic & very rewarding. To my relief, he did. After it was over he got my attention & said that he really liked it, & was surprised that an old movie could be so good. He said that he had only seen old sci-fi shown on Mystery Science Theater!
Haven't seen 'Equinox' yet, but have wanted to for years -it's good to see it getting recommended.

Yep, that's 'Demon Seed' 1977 with Julie Christie, based on one of the early novels from Dean R. Koontz.condra wrote:Does anyone remember the name of that old Sci Fi film where there is a house which is run by an intelligent computer, and in the house/computer ends up killing some people and raping one of the inhabitants?

This is a really great movie. Perfect sci-fi in every way. Wonderful music by Gil Mellé -I remember buying the soundtrack on LP, wish I still had it.Pasha wrote:+++ The best for me.mdk wrote:The Andromeda Strain (1971)
Recent TV remake was dreadful...

Another one with a similar theme is Colossus. (AI themed) With that famous vocoder sample (this the voice of world control)

I love 'Colossus: The Forbin Project'! Cool movie. The whole first half is brilliant.paradiddle wrote:Another one with a similar theme is Colossus. (AI themed) With that famous vocoder sample (this the voice of world control)
The voice of Colossus is really creepy, when he says the word 'man' it is always sounds like he saying it with utter contempt.

Don't mind being busted on that, read through the posts, but missed it somehow. Gonna have to rent this one again.oblique strategies wrote: Gotta bust ya machine -'Phase Four' has been mentioned!Great weird movie, & definitely worth bringing up again.
Funny but you pointed out better than I did why Mystery science theatre 3000 is a let down, including not being able to find an origional copy of The Brain That Wouldn't Die.'The Brain that Wouldn't Die' Fun sleaze, with some pretty scary mutilations; as a kid I was really surprised by them. It's cheesy but in a really good way IMO. I love movies with outrageous plots that take themselves way too seriously.Haven't seen 'Equinox' yet, but have wanted to for years -it's good to see it getting recommended.
A friend of my parents gave me a box filled with EC horror comics without covers, but still readable as a 7 year old, I think that warped me but good!

Well, one is Sunshine, by Danny Boyle. I'm kinda in 2 minds about it tho... the first half I absolutely LOVE, and then the second half turns into a slasher movie IMHO.djsynchro wrote:Would love to hear more recent titles that are good
Underworld did part of the soundtrack - tell me that isn't Live's Erosion plugin all over the soundtrack!!
And of course, as per the other thread, Soderberg's Solaris remake.

I really liked the beginning of 'Pitch Black', but thought it went downhill. I'd like to see it again though. Sometimes a film that didn't grab me on the first viewing is more fun the second time around.djsynchro wrote:Well coincidence you should say Sunshine I just "ordered it" online
What about that movie "Pitch Black"?
