Skimmed your blog yesterday, can’t at work cause your site is blocked, so I don’t remember if you mentioned this. Did you format your new iPad from a backup of your old iPad? If so, how did that go? From iTunes backup or iCloud backup?

I always restore from iCloud back ups, simple and it seems to skip transferring a lot of caches and unneeded data.

So I assume all your app saves/progress transfer without issue? I also read once you do the cloud restore you shouldn’t use your old iPad again cause it will confuse the cloud. I guess once I do the backup of the old iPad I should switch wifi off on my old iPad and then give my new iPad a different name once the restore is complete? Bah. I plan to erase my old iPad and give it to my mom anyway.

My goal is to have all my idevices on cloud sync only. At this point there’s really no reason to have iTunes sync and app backups on my computer are taking up way too much space on my iMac HD.

Oh look, a little perspective for the haters who think Apple’s success is largely the result of marketing.

Yeah, everything transfers over just like it was on your last iCloud back up. You'll also need to sync afterwards though, to transfer any music or movies, books, etc. that aren't stored in iCloud.

Cool. I set my old iPad to cloud sync a short time back. With the 128G drive on the new iPad I was hoping to have my whole music library on it, but looking for that option on my old iPad it said I had to download it from the cloud.

Are you using iTunes Match? Not sure how it works if you are.

Yes. And I still don’t understand Apple people who don’t. All the money people throw at Apple and they draw the line at tossing another $25 a year to backup their music library. May their house never burn down with all their computers and backup drives in it.

My friend had his drive fail and didn't have a backup drive and he didn't kick down for Match. Not only did he lose all his DAW files but he also lost all his mixed tracks...2 years worth. FFS.

Not Match related (I think) but I also have it setup to whenever I buy music from iTunes it automatically downloads to 3 Macs, but it doesn’t seem to be 100%. I took my MBA to a place that doesn’t have any internet and there were entire albums missing. All the tracks were grayed out. If you have Match and you have an internet connection you don’t really noticed because it just streams whatever isn’t on your drive.

So I formatted my iPad Air off my cloud synced iPad 3 last night. At first I thought it wasn’t working because it said the process was going to take about 2 minutes. I have about 50G of apps and there’s no way that is going to install in 2 minutes, but after the 2 minutes and then a reboot it started installing the apps a couple at a time in the order I have them arranged on my screen. Within minutes I was using my most frequently used apps because they are in the dock or the first page. The rest installed in the background over the next couple hours.

If only things worked as smoothly, intelligently, and quickly when migrating to a new computer.

I don't like iTunes match because I like to encode AAC's at 320kbps, and I hate the way iTunes organizes all the compilations and DJ mixes I have. Plus I already have a good backup strategy in place, including off site back ups.

Match is great for a lot of people, but not really meant for picky types like me.

320kbps AAC files are the new vinyl.

The main zippiness of the iPad Air I noticed is both the iTunes and App Store apps are a lot zippier, or maybe I should say they actually work. On my iPad 3, iPad mini, and iPhone 5 they are slow as fuck and way too many times don’t load anything at all. They just hang, especially when they are opened from a link in another app or browser.

well yeah, that's a serious problem that needed to be addressed ASAP. it's good to know you can spend your money zippier now. + 1 for tech progress.
