Re: iPad
Soooo I have all 4 of my idevices cloud synced now. Can I safely delete all the apps of my iMac now?
I almost ran out of room on the 5GB of free cloud storge, but then I saw it was backing up all the photos on my iPone...3.5GB. I don't think I've deleted a photo off my iPhone since my iPhone 1 and I just transfer all pictures to the next iPhone.

Re: iPad
iPad minis with retina now available for purchase, 5-10 business days delivery online. Only $100 less than iPad Airs. Not much of a price difference, crApple.

What did you use?
Re: iPad
Auria, alchemy, Thor, nave, impaktor, DM1, and the QuNexus as my controller. Hoping to add a Line6 Sonicport soon to make adding my guitar easier.

I think if I were to get serious about making music on the iPad I would use Beatmaker 2 for beats. It seems more flexible than most.
Obviously you've learned to work with the limitations, but are there any where you go "Damnit!"?
Re: iPad
Hmm, well I think the biggest one is just that there's still so much reliance on things like Audiobus to get apps to work together. It can be a little finnicky with some apps, though at this point it looks like the major ones are pretty well up to speed and usually stable. AAP is better in some regards, but still severely lacking in others.
Lack of an easy way to sync multiple aps currently is another issue, but not a huge one for me. There's some workarounds that can sort of make it work from what I understand, but they all seem a little too kludgey for me.
I think the biggest thing is just being able to recognize that it's NOT a laptop or computer still, and to embrace the limitations instead of letting them stop me. And really, at this point there's very few limitations anyway.

Hopefully Apple will come up with a standard for music apps to play well together with MIDI and audio. It kind of feels like it’s at Apple TV “hobby” level right now.Tarekith wrote:Hmm, well I think the biggest one is just that there's still so much reliance on things like Audiobus to get apps to work together. For me I think the current state would lead to a lot of songs that are repetitive and simplistic just because it’s too much of a hassle to do anything more. I like songs that have distinct changes and sections but when I’ve composed some songs on the iPad I’ve come up with a decent section but lost steam when I thought about taking it in a completely new direction and revisiting sections, you know, classic song structure.
I find your exploration quite inspiring though. My main problem is I mostly just use my iPad at home and if I’m going work on music why not just use the real deal? Maybe I should approach it at a less grandiose level, like force myself to make some loops that I can import into my computer. Start there.
Re: iPad
Sure, that's definitely one way to approach it. I often use the iPad just like a hardware synth, firing up something like Nave and recording it into Live or another DAW. Or using an app like BM2 to create some rough grooves I can export and arrange in the laptop.
Oops, just realized I keep calling IAA "AAP", but that's at least a start that Apple is realizing how people want to use multiple audio apps together. But yes, things are likely still in their infancy.
Really though it's not THAT bad, this is the 4th song in the last few months that was 100% iPad that I've done. And all of those weren't done just to say they were "100% iPad" as if I'm proving something, but because it's a really fun way of working for me.

Re: iPad
To me this need goes beyond iOS and also applies to OS X. I would love to see Apple enhance CoreAudio/CoreMIDI to include a sort of OS-level ReWire type function that could accommodate audio and MIDI routing as well as sync between apps.Tarekith wrote:Hmm, well I think the biggest one is just that there's still so much reliance on things like Audiobus to get apps to work together. Its worth trying to remember that yesterdays ceiling is today's floor.
If someone had said to me in 1995 - soon you will be able to take this Emu VintageKeys module, it will be portable, and have a super hi-res screen. You will be able to sequence on it, and not only use it via midi, recording via its audio output but you could also sequence in-device and render its audio out when away, upload that render to a server to access later. Oh, and BTW this will all be a few hundred quid cheaper than the VintageKeys
I'd have been pretty stoked about that.
But now, I'm annoyed that my iPad doesn't rub my feet while it does all that!

Re: iPad
LOL, I was just talking to a buddy about how insane it is we have this much processing power in such a portable, yet usable device. And all for $500 and less than $100 in apps.

Re: iPad
I haven’t recorded live audio into a DAW since 2002. If nothing else it would be disrespectful to the countless computer plug-ins I have that don’t get used. Doing it with an iPad would also be disrespectful to the bass and guitar that have largely just served as impressive wall decorations.Tarekith wrote:I often use the iPad just like a hardware synth, firing up something like Nave and recording it into Live or another DAW.
