What I'm finding a bit sad at the moment is that this thread was pretty much dead for about 6 hours starting at roughly 11am yesterday, previous to and after that its had an almost regular stream of posts.

I wonder if there was a similar lull in the Middle East as people on both sides paused to take in the monumental Live 8 announcements, followed by a heated yet friendly discussion of its merits.

You do really need to take your paternal attitude somewhere else. There have been maybe two threads here about the current conflict, and like you say the Abes let us talk, which is great. If you'll notice none of us are being jerks about it, except the poor taste in photos on 3dots part.

This doesn't make any sense, Israel and Gaza are all populated areas, and war generally isn't fought in some sort of arena, it's in cities etc. Ask the UN which side is committing bigger war crimes, and I'm not sure you'll like the response.

Seriously, I think the sort of universal PTSD on both sides (remember the middle east was one empire pre WWI, and WWI arguably wasn't due to German/Ottoman aggression), that really made this what it is today. That said though, it's similar to me to the tactics our government here used to invade Iraq and institute the Patriot Act. They basically pumped us up with threats from the outside and branded anybody disagreeing as not realizing how big the threat was.

Sure, Israel is surrounded by butthurt countries that are filled with very active extremist parties, and I agree in a strong military presence. I just don't think instituting harsher border restrictions to the point of not allowing food through was a logical choice for not stirring the pot with Hamas, in fact to me it's obvious that some people in the Israeli government were very interested in pressuring Hamas to do something stupid, which of course being proud fundamentalists, they did. The thing reeks of political maneuvering on the part of both Hamas and the current Israeli government. I really see no way any of this will help peace, in any way.

Also to be clear here, my top famous people crushes are filled with jewish women, I have no ill feelings at all that way, in fact I think that as far as ethnic or cultural peoples jewish people are in my most admired list for sure. You could pretty much shoot me dead afterwards and I wouldn't care at all if you could somehow arrange a threesome with Sara Silverman and Natalie Portman.

Let thread drop for god sake. Everything that can be said has been said from every angle. And as for land grabbing as you say, research the 1967 6 day war. Israel did not start the 6 day war in 1967, the arabs did and they lost the very war they started wanted. And when they were defeated by starting a war israel didn't even want, they lost the Gaza strip, the sinai pininsula, west bank and the golan heights to Israel in the process. If they would not have stirred up bees nest with israel to begin with, all that land they wouldn't have lost in first place. They helped create this mess big time for themselves.
