Re: pre-unemployment freak out
I know we're only half way through the year but I think this thread is a shoe-in for BEST DERAILED THREAD OF THE YEAR 2011.

I hope there'll be a gathering of the Wongs and I think TED Talks would be the proper venue.

beats, it's derailed yes, but lets not forget that if you freak out too bad before you are unemployed it could spill over into your new found schedule. you know, the one where you sleep late every day, wake up... piss... and go back to bed until about 10 (give or take half an hour).

I’m actually feeling a lot better…something about living in the Silicon Valley and being surrounded by companies that do things you can actually be excited about. My original, maybe unfounded, fear was that I’m not a software or hardware engineer but every company has some level of administrative or grunt work that needs to be done.
(And don’t piss on my current mood with “yeah, but it’s tough……”
One of my coworkers today asked me to help him with a closing down project even though I was already in the middle of one. He then said “But I think it would benefit….” I cut him off and said “Nothing here is benefitting me right now.” He walked away deflated. I’m helping out but there’s no fucking way I’m going above and beyond.

Well I'm new and young so my opinion barely----
Oh wait, what's that? This thread has already been derailed? We do that here? Awesome!
Anyway, I was going to say, if you're looking for new hobbies, you could try out a site like 43Things. It's a site that makes groups for people with different goals. You type in a goal and it brings you to a group of people who are attempting that same or similar goal, then you can talk to people etc etc. Also there's a idea cloud at the bottom that shows you what people have searched, so you can look for hobby ideas that way. I thought it was dumb at first but then I realized it could really help boost motivation and productivity.
Just a thought, I'm not sure if you're still in the first-page scenario.

Damnit. My last day is Thursday. The other 3 guys being let go will have their exit interview in the morning and then they get to go home because their tools of the trade will have already been stripped. I have to stick around because as long as I still have a pulse I can still be of some use. Of course my boss might want me to stick around longer because he’s worked closely with me and wants to get all nostalgic and have a heart to heart, but I sure hope he doesn’t try to convince me to stick around in the industry or hope for a zero hour offer from the new owner because as Kelly Clarkson so eloquently put it “I’m already gone.”
Re: pre-unemployment freak out
^ dude... take the loot... it's easy money. you'll be burning through severance soon enough and then it's on to unemployment. aren't you glad you paid in for 15, 20 years or so?? now you get some get back! you don't even have to feel guilty, but there is a timer on that shit so every day you can get paid the wage vs. welfare way... do it.

FUCK! SERENITY NOW!!
I arrive home to a rent increase notice today, and they screwed us and have been planning this for years!!
By CA state law they can't increase rent more than 8% a year. They increased it way more than that. I thought HA! NOPE! because we singed a new lease a little less than a year ago!
HERE'S THE CATCH! The lease we signed a little under a year ago was just to lock us into what we were already paying. So for about 2 years we hadn't gotten any rent increase and if you don't get a rent increase in 2 years they can raise it 21%....which is exactly what they did almost to the day.
And another catch. They are no longer accepting month to month rentals. So we'd have to sign another 6 - 9 month lease at the fucked up increase!
MOTHERFUCKERS!!!!

If a zero hour offer comes, you may want to take it now.
Hell, I'd take it even if the rent didn't go up. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face. <--Another cliche! whew!

Imagine working at Hertz rent-a-car but not as glamorous. And you're not renting cars. You're renting 53' trailers...to fuckers that drive for a living but don't own a goddamn GPS because that's more tech than they can handle. And commute there 30 miles on one of the worst traffic freeway stretches in the Bay Area. Do that for close to 5 years. Now the big glimmer of hope is I can do the exact same thing for 15k less a year and get off 2 hours later than I am now??
NOW do you know why I'm pissed off and uninspired all the time?
Not even The Rock could smell or handle what I'm cookin' right now.
