I really like the weird blend of quantum physics + 'Quatermass & The Pit' + Catholicism + H.P. Lovecraft that John Carpenter cooked up in Prince Of Darkness

Image

And if you like H.P. Lovecraft, then you have to see John Carpenter's In The Mouth of Madness Woo-hoo!

And while we're at it, another fun H.P. Lovectaft Sci-Fi/Horror hybrid: From Beyond

Didn't expect such a big response to this at all! I've compiled these into an IMDB list for easier adding to watch lists etc.

132 awesome sci-fi movies so far...

Not sure if these have been mentioned, but they're pretty good too:

Pitch Black
The Island
Lockout
In Time
Planet of the Apes (1968)
Attack the Block
The Adjustment Bureau
Surrogates
Push
Jumper
V for Vendetta
Things to Come (1936)

Robbie the Robot! Lewis, the owner of the store in Melbourne (AWave) I get my Moog gear from had one of the original Robbies from Forbidden Planet in the store for a while. He traded it for some equipment from a collector, then sold it on to another collector. Ah, if I had had the money... But my wife would have killed me!
And growing up with 'Lost In Space' ...the memories. Every now and then I wave my arms around going "Warning! Danger Will Robinson!" ...needless to say, my kids have no idea what I'm on about and think me quite mad!

Whoops, fixed! The list order doesn't really mean anything btw; just the order in which they were mentioned here :)

is that the (recent) one about the kid who can teleport??

+1 for V for Vendetta... i dunno that it's sci-fi, but it's one of the best movies ever IMO.

Yes, Jumper is the one about teleportation.

And I agree that it's a stretch to consider V for Vendetta a sci-fi flick, but I couldn't resist. Hmmm. I looked it up on Netflix, and they've categorized it as sci-fi, but I still think it's a stretch anyway.

Jumper was better than i thought it would be... in a lot of ways... and not as good as it should be in others. my son loved it. i liked it. as goes with the territory in Sci-Fi... a certain amount of suspended belief is required. still, it's worth a watch. agreed.

also agreed about this one being underrated. it's a really good flick.

You may be interested in the movie that inspired 'Enemy Mine':
Robinson Crusoe On Mars
(1964)

Decent updating of the classic survival tale to the planet Mars.
