alesis micron..........programming that was a bitch and learning sound design with it took so long to tweak one preset.

Roland MC-505. Had it for half a year, about 6 years ago and pretty much never used it. Reason and my Yamaha RS-7000 were so much more fun.

Had one for three years whose motherboard consistently every eight months or so (which is good, cos Danish laws dictate that all repairs are covered by a one year warranty). I loved it, though, great little machine. It broke at a particularly inconvenient time once, though, so I got a G4 iBook in november 2005, the last 12" model they ever made. I still use that for everything, it's a fantastic machine.

Position for my worst hardware purchases are tied between MOTU Traveler (great piece of kit, it was simply MASSIVE overkill for me) and my Hammond L100 which now trips the mains every time I flip the power switch. I was convinced I could fix it up but 6ish years later...

Consistently died...

There was a problem with that particular model (iBook G3 dual USB. All in all I think I got 6 new motherboards over the course of three and a half years - and seeing as the logic board in a Mac is basically the computer minus the HD, the optical drive the screen and the plastic parts, the could of just given me a newer one (although the later ones actually turned out to have a different problem with much the same consequences) and never seen the sight of me again - but nae. Ah well. This one seems solid..

i'd have to say M-Audio Oxygen 8 back when i first got into production. Bought it as a combo set with Reason 2.5

Never could get the damn keyboard to work. Sent it back and kept Reason.


also, this one Sony MP3 player a couple years ago, i forget the model name. This was back when i was a hardcore anti-Mac guy so I was trying to be "cool" by refusing to fall into the iPod sheep herd so i bought this thing (which by the way cost me more than an iPod while it had a smaller drive and a black and white lcd screen) and oh boy did i regret it

now i'm a happy OSX/ipod sheep... errrrmm... i mean, owner.

i have a midi-man oxygen 8, and it still works

It's funny how many coveted pieces of gear (Sp-808, Micron, EMU Samplers, Kyma, Waldorf Q, etc...) get mentioned!

Goes to show that you really have to get some hands on time with stuff, no matter how good the reviews, everyone has their own taste.

I think Live is my best software purchase ever, X-Station is prolly my best hardware purchase ever, although getting a decent desk, 22" monitor & nice kensington trackball have helped tons!

As far as worst purchases, it's a toss up, there are lots of things that were great and I should have used (EMU Emax, Yamaha AN1x, first Electribes, Boss SE-50, Dr. 660, Atari ST).

Then there were things I used too much cause it was all I had (Kawai K4R, a crap Roland controller).

Then there are things that sucked but you could flip at a good price, so no hard feelings...

Then there were the things that just suck outright:

Samson USB mic
Marshall Condensor mic
EV C04 mic
Tascam 4 track (noisey, expensive)
Some patch banks that were just lackluster

Kawai K4r.....yeah I know (some) House freaks love it - but maaaaaan it's boring, lame, tame, dull, tedious and uninspiring.......sold it recently after it collected dust for years
