As a beginner, I find the USB Trigger Finger was exactly what I needed. Enough knobs for EQing A and B, sliders for Crossfader, Volume, and FX, and the pads for triggering samples or as on/off FX switches. I just DJed for the first time Friday night and the Trigger Finger did me quite alright.

Wow - 7 pages of replies and not one mention of the Novation Remote series...

I have an Axiom for keys - so I went with the Remote SL Zero. By far the most bang-for-your-buck midi controller. Inexpensive, automap, TONS of controls, usb or battery powered, midi clock, super configurable - I could go on.

Plus it's really really portable, fits right in my laptop bag...

I am about to buy a trigger finger.

The CME VX5 49 keys with motorized faders and drum pads looks really nice too but it isn't out yet.
