Careful, now. Saying a quality music setup centered around Windows could be expensive might start a riot.

You must be totally nuts moving from osx to windows, i am shure you will regret it.
Be shure that you get a large pack of headache pills with windows, you will need them.
We have several windows maschines for audio at work and it's a nightmare.

Doesn't anybody read the dates on these necrobumped threads, Alex Reynold's (remember him?) post at the top of the page is from 2003. cperezzz raised it from the dead where it belonged

Hackintosh? What the fuck's a Hackintosh?
@OP:
Sure, Macs are slower than PCs but when comparing the price, but you get more than that. Show me PC case that's as nice as the latest Powermac. Also, here's a phrase for you: Bus-powered Firewire!
Like someone else said, performance is going to improve a lot once Ableton get round to doing AltiVec optimisation... and you never know what's around the corner from IBM/Motorola. Do you really want a computer with an 8086 in it, anyway?
OS X might not be as mature as what we know but it's getting there and the foundations are solid. And I mean, we can still look down our noses at PC users for having all those useless mousebuttons, but also for still mucking about with ASIO drivers and... whatever it is they do with MIDI. Plug-ins and apps other than Live are moving to OS X now... even NI seem to be getting their arse in gear.
Seriously, I think you should think things through. Maybe look at getting a processor upgrade for your Powermac, they're quite cheap. But never just think about the power, it's really the software that makes a computer, and OS X is just the better software. You don't have to worry about yearly new versions from M$ either. Win!

edit - Fuck. Should read the whole thread... you already got a portable!
