I love this joke.Little Tony was sitting on a park bench munching
on one candy bar after another.
After the 6th candy bar, a man on the bench across from him said,
"Son, you know eating all that candy isn't good for you.
It will give you acne, rot your teeth, and make you fat."
Little Tony replied, "My grandfather lived to be 107 years old."
The man asked, "Did your grandfather eat 6 candy bars at a time?"
Little Tony answered, "No, he minded his own fucking business."
Suit #1: I mean, have you got any insight as to why a bright boy like this would jeopardize the lives of millions?
Suit #2: No, sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.

All right, I'll chime in on this misplaced thread. With regard to proving God's existence via human logic, I find such an attempt quite unreasonable. If you want to approach the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) with a scientific analysis, your gonna be disappointed, IMO. If such a monotheistic god does exist - a man of science should quickly recognize that the human brain, as infant and unpowerful it is, would never be able to possibly comprehend such a deity nor the forces around it. Any attempt to prove or disprove religion through meger 21st century science is a vain attempt to prove or disprove what you already want to be true. If one comes to be religous or atheistic, based solely on scientific reasoning, then that person is fooling themselves and approaching the issue all wrong.charles-l wrote:I didn't want to enter this debate and explicitly give my view but god using logical reasoning doesn't exist. To those who beleive in this entity and feel offend sorry, but if you really what to prove your beliefs you need to try and prove them wrong. If you don't open your mind to over opinions and to empirical findings then you'll never know that you are right or wrong.
By god I mean
- A single entity
- Creator of all in existence or catalyst to this
- An entity beyond the constrains of the laws of nature/physic (i.e. supernatural)
- Creator of morality and is perfectly benevolent
- Entity that is omnipresent (existed before the creation of the universe)
- God is omniscient, omnipotent and creates with purpose
"Remember, atheism is not a worldview itself. Atheism is defined by the view it does not have theism." - so don't think that athiests believe the same thing as each other or have developed their views in the same way.
Both sides, atheists and religious, try to preach their dogmas as thoughthey have mastered the subject and truly understand the nature of the universe, life, and the afterlife - if any. I find that ridiculous because, as stated above, the human mind, with all of it's animalistic tendencies and undeveloped potential, couldn't possibly understand such subject matter. We can only guess, conjecture, and hold faith in one belief over the other based upon a "gut" feeling. Hell, western civilization didn't even become "enlightened" in the methods of science until a few hundred years ago. We're not that smart.
Signed,
A man of reason, logic, and science who has no f'in idea if there's a god, gods, or just emptiness, but lives life in accordance with the belief in "good" and "evil" based upon a gut feeling.

of course people are free to adopt any belief system they wan't to, but if i'm ever on the receiving end of a suicide bomb, or a cruise misile i'd like to think it would be based on more than a gut feeling.
<edit>
when i said an atheist accepts that he doesn't know the answers, the questions i was thinking of were more "why am i here?", "where did the universe come from?", "what is concousness?", etc, not "is there a god?". religons pretend to know all the answers, and tend to be pretty hostile to anyone who thinks differently.

Tha Orb
Dr. Alex Patterson of "The Orb" is my electro-god.

Re: Tha Orb
Interesting you say that. I just noticed that The Orb is playing here in Chicago in a few weeks and I'm thinking of checking them out. I've never listened to them though but Wikipedia says their atmospheric and dubbish. Is that right?audiovoid wrote:Dr. Alex Patterson of "The Orb" is my electro-god.

I like dub, but atmospheric can be a d/f word for really boring.

so long as they dont play one of their antagonising beatless gigscharles-l wrote:you can really go wrong with the orb - you have to at least check it out
Orb do some amazing music and soundscapes and I used to have a few of their albums
apparently they decided to do a gig once with no beat whatsoever and pissed off alot of people
orb
Yea you definately CAN'T go wrong with the Orb because their music is all across the board, yet they still maintain heavy Dub and Ambient influence even over their hardest tracks. And their live shows are simply amazing, both visually and aurally (is that a word?). I 've seen them twice and both times were perfect. THey tend to have a very heavy_almost industrial style_vibe when they play live too, so even if you think that you're not that into them from their cd's, check them out. You won't be disapointed.
...unless of course they play a whole set with no beats in a venue where people are expecting to dance.
They're playing at Bimbo's here in San Francisco next week and I'm psyched. I can't wait. I Hope some of my ramblings were of help.
