3D interfaces suck.
2D for life!

I've always edited my computer desktops to look simple and less 3D. It's unnecessary on a 2D screen.

Thank you for this very interesting discussion here, seriously.

We pretty much agree with you on all points regarding improvements of the design but we suffer here from the same issues as with the rest of the software - many good ideas but only a limited amount of people to do the job.
Things we want to address in the future is multi monitor support, more user control of the appereance, and tons of graphical details. But there are still quite essential things to do on the functional side of the software.... well, some day....

Best,
Robert / Ableton

I'm very photosensitive, those klinikal black skins are in the top 5 improvements to Live for me personally in the last few years. thanks for those, are they updated for 6?

i like something that looks like a spreadsheet but makes pretty/nasty noises when i ask it to.

bad grammar, i know, but drunkenness will do that to ya...

p.s. klinikal's skins rule the roost for me...

I just copied the skins folder over to the live 6b12 folder and they still work.

The Abes have known that users want their own skin tweak GUI, we wait, we hope, we want. In the meantime users like Klinikal do that voodoo that they do so well.

agreed..
but almost all the things you mention here are UI based,
not GUI based..

the topic starter asked for an overhaul of the GUI (although he said UI in the topic title)

this thread quickly changed into a UI wish/change discussion,
while it actually had to be about the GUI..

UI = User Interface = how things work..
GUI = Graphical User Interface = how things look..

two totally independent things..

oh, and 3rd party plugs don't count.
yep, we should get the Abletons to make a built in
"VST to Live GUI converter feature" so all other vst`s
would look as good as Live and it`s plugs.

So, if Ableton's not going to implement the Paris splash - can I get in there and write the code to have like the hottest and richest sweetheart ever pop up everytime I fire up live?

no?

:(

Actually the User Interface is cool - I don't know about changing it, it's cool

dual monitor supprot would be nice though

a splash of you know who never hurt anyone ;)

i see what you're saying .. i do think that the two are closely related and many practical GUI changes are not possible without a corresponding UI upgrade.

example:

i could be wrong, but the current UI would probably not allow detachable interface sections (Session Grid, Mixer, Arrange Grid) that could be separated on screen, moved to new locations, and spread out over multiple screens.

i just dont think its within the capabilities of what the program is built on. this goes for any number of other requests that are way more basic or "simple" as well ...

as long as they stick with the same basic look of the program, and keep within the same philosophy, why does anyone care so much whether or not the underlying UI is different?

again -- highly HIGHLY doubt Live will ever look like Logic or Reason or anything close. i think people should give them more credit than that.
