It is 33 cl (that's 1/3 of a liter, I don't know how much that is in the other metric system). The monks say you should drink it at room t°, but I pop a chilled one open at the beginning of the evening, and drink it (or should I say "taste it") slowly ,and by bedtime he's empty. But that"s when I'me home, when I go out I, drink Duvel ,less alcohol (8°) and it goes in much smoother (the Wesrmalle is realy thick, you can't swallow it).

I dimly remember doing a gig in Belgium where the promoter took us out around town in the afternoon before the gig. We began by drinking the double, wondering what the trippel was, we got that one next.

I quite like weisse beer at the mo, obviously imported , Erdinger, Maisels Weisse, stuff like that if I'm in England. If I'm away in the Germanic countries I like to sample the local micro breweries and I'm easilly convinced I have found a new favourite. Normally I cant pronounce them right though.

OT a bit , but ... Can anyone enlighten me why spirits are so crazy expensive in Switzerland?

That is a classic; I have lots of friends around the globe, and allways one somebody comes over here , they try out the beer and end up completely wasted. Especially Americans, only th Irish people can drink it and still walk the line.

Angstrom: just for your information, spirits were more expensive in the past, a couple of years ago they reduced the taxes on alcool.
Every damn thing is expensive in switzerland, really.

I had some Swiss friends over recently (to England) and they kept saying "how expensive everything is in England! " ... and how dirty naturally

They are from Basle though, I think Zurich may be a different story, but still it shows how things change in Europe. Here we have an idea that Switzerland is one of the most expensive place on earth, but that idea dates from the 1970's I think .. when life in the UK was a little cheaper.

today in UK a seriously low-rent meal for one in a hippy cafe will cost £10 - £12 (€17.6), a pint of beer is £2.40 ish (€3.5) and I think cigarettes are about £5.00(€7.35) for 20 these days (I dont smoke).

When I was last in Basle the Uk contingent kept saying how cheap it was !

mind you, we did survive on beer and folk-songs

yes basel is cheaper than zurich, which is the most expensive city in switzerland, or maybe second to geneva.
Comparing with England and Japan switzerland appears cheap I know but hey, to buy a 100gr steak in switzerland (supermarket, not luxus-hippy-bio-whatever meat) you need 7 € (or one packet of UK cigarettes)
