So, the hard drive, I finally got my RAM installed (two weeks to ship from Texas to CA), I thought I saw the hard drive specs in the manual, no dice!! I also didn't realise I needed to get the drive install kit (lame) from Akai, I'll order it.

Any tips on which hard drives work?

Thanks!! This thread has been a great help. The design of this thing is a bit odd but once you get your head around it it's great! I finally just got into beat slicing, plugged my pre-amped acoustic guitar into the mpc and had some fun with that.

Bummed about the hard drive, I've been holding off on really getting into this, just been learning and goofing off, I guess I'll use more PC transfers.

For that matter, does EVERYONE use a hard drive? Do some people find the PC transfers pain free with a simple work flow?

woops, too much coffee...

by the way I had a 5 hour jam last weekend with the mpc and two copies of Live.

Live (the other guy) -> Edirol UA101 -> my SL25 -> my Live -> my Edirol UA101 with a -50mS clock delay -> MPC worked like a champ the WHOLE jam, synced and rocking... :D

the following hard drives have been tested and approved for use in the MPC1000:

Manufacturer

It is definitely worth to put HD. Now I use USB only for OS updates, using HD for backups and I put all my samples archives there- even if I will never use most of them. I took old 30G Toshiba that was unused since years, I guess it is safer to take old models since MPC is old technology and you can probably get something from Ebay for around 20 $.

nah, this thread has been great, from what I've seen mpc-forums is pretty inactive and not very n00b friendly. To be honest a lot of the people there seem like real attitude laden idiots. There was a wave were a few of us bought mpcs at the same time and are learning together.

There have been more great helpful posts in this thread than you've made in the whole forum ;)

from time to time I play a newly recorded track in a squence and it has MUTE on/off commands on it, is this because I'm not turning off overdub after recording? I'm trying to be careful but you know, substances, gear, mistakes... I'm used to deleting them (show only 'mute' in step edit menu), just curious.

Just be patient and I am sure these cats will get up to speed a lot quicker
Than trying to explain the benefits of LIVE in the MPC-Forums.

I could debate the benefits and differences between the MPC and LIVE for
farkin ages.

But together we can rule the werld.

I'll start posting more in 4 weeks when i get to SF and grab a new MP1k !

your life will be great in 4 weeks!! been a bit cold here but the city's had a great vibe this winter.

With Live I see the mpc for doing smaller stuff, making beats, slicing loops, making midi/sample loops. It's a great sampler and therefore drum machine. Making a tight Program with layers and effects can get DEEP on the mpc.

i've used Live to 'collect all and save' drum hits from my sample library, after the .wavs are collected I can browse to that dir to load the .wav files into the mpc.

Together, I've left the mpc slaved, then I can lay down beats with it while I play other stuff in Live (like a DJ set and LOONG samples).

Ultimately I see that I could do most of the same stuff in Live as with an mpc but the mpc is just more specialised and there's nothing like playing with hardware.

It's fun being a n00b with gear again. I'll give mpc-forums a chance, look for the n00b. :D

missed your post.
get a kit, the HDM-10 (check ebay), that holds a hard drive internally, as D Das posted. It's ~$50.

well, happy new year.

i have given up on the headache of syncing my mpc and live.

and decided to just start recording my drum loops into peak, which is fine. once i record say a four bar loop into peak and edit it perfectly i would think it would be ready to go once dropped into live. but nooooooo, it is not, even after adjusting the first warp marker there are off spots throughout the loop :( so i make the adjustments in live and get it right but what is going on. is the mpc drifting? i have swing set at about 60%, could this be it? hummmmm. keep on. still love the mpc, and live, just wish they played together a little better.

D DAS,
why on earth record into Peak? Why not record directly into Live (unsynced) and then adjust the sync afterwards? That's a whole lot easier!

it is really strange you can't sync your mpc to live...
which os are u using?
i did it with great ease on the new jjos using using MMC.
Let me know so i can give you a step to step help.
i sync live as slave and i can control it though the mpc buttons.
when i start the mpc, life follows..

There are midi issues with Live- it is not the midi champion of softwares and midi itself sucks anyway- but it concerns more advanced/complicated settings. Basic recording works . OK if I record a 9 minutes tune from MPC it may be off, but can fix it in few seconds.
Actually I did it only once as experiment, wanted to do complete song in MPC only.was testing MPC possibility to find out how to use it best for me. In real life it makes more sense to record parts and take advantage on Lives arranging posibilities. On 32 measures or less there will be hardly any sync off if at all.
Even recoding unsynced like Machinate says will probably take few sec to adjust
P.S. MPC controls my entire live setup, including Live slaved, never had any problems.I change syncs live on/off and what is slaved to what (MPC is always master except when I want to load it so then something else takes the masters role) it all works perfectly.
