Thanks nod and mbenigni for the 'props'
Since some of the posts here have got a bit aggressive, I do want to reiterate something I said in the 'MIDI delay recording' thread: I think 99% of Live is
GREAT.
And my criticisms aren't a personal slight against any of the Ableton staff. I appreciate Amaury's willingness to debate the issue, even though I often find his comments head-bangingly incorrect!
I moved to Live after Logic 5.5.1 and it was a breath of fresh air: lovely GUI, creative workflow, cross-platform, good effects,
generally without any of the critical bugs that made Logic a debacle on the PC after Apple stopped updating it.
But for MIDI timing...sheesh...Cubasis under Windows 3.1 was better!
I can totally understand how for many users the MIDI delay would be no issue at all. But surely anyone making music on a computer can see that it should be OPTIONAL.

Can I just clarify something about this Iain...
Is this a "bug" (in the sense that it doesn't work as Ableton intend it) or a feature request (in the sense that it does currently work the way Ableton intend it, but you wish it to be done differently)?

headquest, you've hit upon the politics of the whole issue:
It currently (in 5.2.2 and 6.x) DOES work as Ableton intends.
Previously, I believe, it didn't even work like that.
But for those of us who are requesting an option to change the behaviour, we experience it as a bug - not just a desirable feature but an essential one.
Why? Because we would like MIDI to be recorded where we play it, like other DAWs do.
So technically, it's a feature request, but experientially it's a deal-breaking bug.
This is why the lack of action by Ableton has raised so many people's heckles: it feels as if our experience of music-making/performance is being ignored -- not just that some whimsical feature request isn't being implemented.

Okay, thanks for clarifying that then.
I see where you are coming from. But I think it would be helpful if you could not describe this as a *bug*, as it suggests Live is a buggy POS (which it isn't) or that the Abes are unable to make it work the way they want, which is misleading.
(but by all means moan about how it works all you want to

)
From a personal point of view by the way, I think I am sort of aware of this delay, although latency with my firewire interface is so freaking low (at least compared to what I grew up using!), so it's not unworkable for me.
In view of what you have said, I definitely agree there should be a user-option for this, anyway.
Peace.

hehe....I did that the first time I tried LIVE 4/5, but not because it didn't make a sound.
Gave it another shot some time after that.....and then it clicked and I was sold.
Thank goodness for choices, huh?
