i dont see whats wrong with taking a melody and working around it to complete a track. take the Prodigy's 'Girls' for example, the hook is taken from D Trains 'Your The One For Me'. still takes a hell of a lot of thought, effort & Idea's to make the track what it is.Nod wrote:
It's an awesome record I'll agree - but surely that because it's apparent how much work went into it? He wasn't just taking a few sounds and regurgitating them - it's one thing to take a single melodic sample and base a track around it - it's another to take disparate musical elements and construct an, otherwise unachievable, collage. It's like the old PE tunes, something that could never been done now because of copyright laws, taking hundreds of individual pieces to create the whole - along with Chuck ripping over the top![]()
Daft Punk - Is it me?

Again agreed - like I said mate we are dealing with the subjective here. DP don't do it for me because, musically, I just don't hear a lot of effort being put in but, as I've said, props to them for making a living in an otherwise very difficult industry...jedeye wrote:i dont see whats wrong with taking a melody and working around it to complete a track. take the Prodigy's 'Girls' for example, the hook is taken from D Trains 'Your The One For Me'. still takes a hell of a lot of thought, effort & Idea's to make the track what it is.
Another point worthy of note here, that I'm sure many are familiar with, is the old chestnut of building a track around a sample and, at some stage in the proceedings, you find you can either recreate it with a better sound or just do away with it entirely...it's also a good technique when writing wise your in a 'bit of a rut' to take bits of someone else's material as a jump off point - but, personally, I'll always go back and remove them once the track is done.
Dude - the tracks I listened too consisted of an endlessly looped phrase from a 70's track with a lame drum beat. Please stop trying to make it sound like anything else.jedeye wrote: i dont see whats wrong with taking a melody and working around it to complete a track.
P-Diddy's "Every Breath You Take" was every bit as groundbreaking, entertaining, and full of "thought, effort & Idea's" as the Daft Punk stuff.
I dig a lot of "dance" music, or whatever. Seriously. I just cannot imagine enjoying this without a lot of drugs, and even then its a questionable proposition.
p.s. Nod your description of PE's use of samples is right on, yer alright!

The sample they've lifted provides the backing for most of the track (with the addition of a groundbreaking hipass filter), then some vague notion of a 'riff' finally appears around 2 mins followed by an almost interesting 3 note Supertramp kinda electric keys thing, as for the wicked solo there's about 10 million guitar/keys players who could knock that out on their tea break - a coupla brief flurries of 32nd note runs with some poor phrasing being the highlight of it's 'wickedness'. The 'vocals'? Frankly surprised they haven't went the whole hog an included the 'I wish I could fly, right up to the sky' school of erudite rhyming couplets...
Yer right - it's nothing
What does it matter if some trained musician out there could play the solo? Theres people out there who can imitate anything.
I figured out how to play the lead to Enjoy The Silence a couple weeks ago, wow, I guess that totally takes away from what Depeche Mode wrote like 20 years ago huh?
My point is that it's ridiculous to say DP brought nothing else to their tracks than what they sampled. That hook clearly does provide the base for Digital Love, I won't argue with you there. But as I said earlier, what makes the track stand out is what they added over the hook, not the hook itself. Digital Love is what? Almost 10 years old now? Its not often I hear that kind of solo in electronic music, and to me its quite refreshing.
Of course you're entitled to your opinion and thats fine, but please don't come in here and say that the samples are all they have.
this is a snippet of an interview with Thomas Bangalter of DP.
"I’ve stumbled upon these posts online where they are like, “look at all these samples,” and half of this list is not true. The samples that were used have always been cleared and it’s very blatant. There [are] hardly any credits on Human After All, except in the case of “Robot Rock” there is a sample of Breakwater. I think sampling is always something that we’ve completely legitimately done. It’s not something we’ve hidden, it’s almost a partisan or ideological way of making music, sampling things and being sampled.
On my label we’ve been doing records that are nine minutes with only [a single] one-second loop, with even less foundation than there is on “Robot Rock.” It’s always been a way to reinterpret things – sometimes it’s using an element from the past, or sometimes recreating them and fooling the eyes or the ears, which is a fun thing to do."

Hey pulsoc, you should craft a tune entirely made entirely of daft punk samples. Chop, cut and paste and mangle beyond recognition as you please! Load daft punk samples into a sample based synths or whatever and go nuts. Only rule is, no other recordings else except daft punk samples as the base ingredients.
See if you can transform something that is not "groundbreaking, entertaining, and full of "thought, effort & Idea's" into something else which is "groundbreaking, entertaining, and full of "thought, effort & Idea's".
I think it would be a fun experiment. Up for the challenge?

no, sampling is wrong. people are now only allowed to make tunes with the sounds they can make using there own mouth, limbs etc.icedsushi wrote:Hey pulsoc, you should craft a tune entirely made entirely of daft punk samples.
