I have one. It works. Infact, the recorded sound I get is quite transparent, as far as my ears tell me. Or am I a fool? Are my ears not trained enough to distinguish something?

The reason I ask is MAudio is dissed thoughout this forum. I got this multi-channel in-out card cause my once previously preferred DAW could record several tracks at once through the multiple drivers available. Live only records from one input driver at a time. So... should I be looking for a simpler and highter quality card? I don't need an MOTU. Something basic with a couple mono ins and outs that's commonly available and people swear by if I could indeed be getting a better quality AD/DA conversion.

The question is, why do people in this forum think MAudio cards blow?

People don't diss the PCI cards M-Audio make (most of which predate Digidesign taking over the company). I.e. The 1010, Delta 66, 24/96, 24/192 etc.

People DO diss the USB and Firewire interface M-Audio's because most are cheaply made and with terrible drivers. And better quality alternatives exist for not much more money but offer immensely more quality in build, s/n ratio and low latency drivers. Since Digidesign got involved, things seem to be worse.

The Delta 1010 (if they would get with it and make a PCIe card), would be a great 8 i/o unit.

although it has no preamps. Get an 8 channel pre first and then it is reasonably OK

I got a Delta 1010LT as well. Bought it 6 years ago. I did about 8 driver updates from their website. Each time everything was fucked up and I had no sound at all. There isn't even one driver available for download which I was able to get sound of. The one on the original CD which is 6 years old is the only one which is working. If I ever lose that CD i can trash that piece of shit......

I use a Delta 1010LT. I'm not expert, but it works great for me. And yes, inputs 1 and 2 are balanced xlr with preamp.

I've never hand any driver problems to date...maybe I'm just lucky.

I have the Delta 1010LT and it's been solid.

I've updated drivers twice - to keep current with PT. Haven't had any problems. That's not to say that there wouldn't be problems on a different system. Each system has its own quirks in terms of hardware and configuration. Just saying I've had none.

I use a pair of ART Tube MP Studio Mic Preamps for phantom power and light limiting on inputs 1 & 2 - also use a dbx 1066 compressor. In addition, I have a couple of Behringer DI boxes in case I need to feed additional signals in.

The M-Audio Control panel comes in handy when you want to bring in consumer-level peripherals at -10dB. It allows me to digitize from vinyl using a Technics 1200 turntable from my stereo system - into the box at 96KHz/24 bit WAV. Otherwise, I leave it at +4dB.

So, yes, M-Audio USB gets low marks from this community. But, the PCI stuff - and again, these are pre-Avid/Digidesign products - seem to do the job nicely and are well-respected.

Curse you, you $160 sound card for not having phantom power!! You made me buy a phantom power module for $40!!!

I had the delta 1010 for years - great card and outboard box - I still use a PCI card (RME) and it's great - PCI or PCIe is the way to go for lowest latencies.
