assuming we ever had the plot, it's improving, right? i mean, think how much better the response is than if obama had run 40-50 years ago. i sometimes find it hard to believe how recently segregation was legal. to go from apartheid in the south to obama winning the presidency, including the votes of some southern states, in under 50 years or so will be incredible (even if there's still a long way to go).

However, I grew up in Northern Britain and in a town that was littered with moron racists and gangs of South Asian immigrants who would routinely try to show who had the smallest brain cell. Don't forget the BNP / NF in Britain and racial tensions in various cities there.
Canada is better, being a country full of immigrants to start with, but we are not immune to racist idiots here either.

OK, I don't want to "pile on" here... but...
Two days ago in a roadside diner in the middle of nowhere in Northern California (which had NRA and "Vote YES on Prop 8" stickers on the wall and a bible verse on the till receipt, I overheard a guy say [and this is a verbatim quote]:
"Even though he's black, people are voting for Obama because he's young and good looking. People who vote are so stupid."
Not bad, huh?
