Hi all,


Yet another, how do I make this sound thread.


I want to understand how you make that sound that GRUM uses in Whoa and I guess is pretty pervasive... kindof like justice bass as well.


Im trying to get that funky sounding bass, it almost sounds like a cross between a synth and a bass guitar.

Can I get some help here.

its got great pop but it also sounds pretty distorted and rhaspy at hte same time.


I know he uses pitch bend down an octave to get that owwww sound. but I cant get the sound right.


I have a Juno 106 and a bass guitar as tools... as well as outboard distortions and some amps that I can use.

Lay the wisdom on me.

If it sounds like there is bass guitar than it probably is. It's not really a mystery.

use operator. his basslines are all FM-ey


if you listen to his (great) remix of Anorrak's Night Drive With You, you can def. hear it there.

Go Back - that bassline is FM all the way. The upper register harmonics give it away, thats not a distortion plug you are hearing, its FM synthesis.

I'd experiment with Operator. You can get that sound. I have.

this track doesnt have the exact sound, but you can hear elements of it in the bassline, which is operator through saturator then compressed, the kick ducks the bassline about 5 dB. The variations in the tone are created by automating the 2nd oscillators octave.

Any hints at how it is constructed? I dont have operator but I think I can use an FM synth VST>

you will probably only need 3 ops (oscillators) to make it happen. off the top of my head i'd say all three ops are in series (if you have the option of different routing options)


osc 1 creates your low end.


osc 2 modulates it an octave above (you will have to mess with just how much modulation its gonna require)

osc 3 modulates the prior two between at a higher octave (use your ears!) to create the upper harmonic. (and the attack of the bass, giving it that guitar pluck kinda thing)

from there you will have to adjust your envelopes to shape where the individual harmonics come in, for example i'd use a quick attack and decay and lower sustain for your third operator, to keep the attack of the bass loud and plucky but not sustaining all buzzy.

I have FM8 so that would be what I am programing with.


Seems like it shouldnt be too hard to set that up. I will give it a shot when I get home.

Anyone want to lay some knowledge on me who uses NI FM8.

im pretty sick of this sound..

it's just any synth run thru an amp simulator then thru heaps of distortion, this one also seems to have a noice oscillator on top.

Sounds like it's coming from a korg 707..its a hardware fm synth with a very particular chorus build in, that's what i hear..

You can hear it in this song, a old classic from the 90's , but with more sustain
