Question about how to use ableton Live with a rock group?
Hi,
Im a newbie. I've only just started to read the manual for my new software ableton Live 5. I want to use Live with my band(guitars, drums, vocals, keys)
If we play 11 songs a night then i want to be able to use ableton Live to play tracks that we recorded in the studio when we were making our album. I want to have a seperate click track on Ableton sent to our drummer via a USB/ MIDI interface such as M-Audio protrack. And then i want to have samples or pre recorded tracks (ie. organs etc.) sent to the P.A.
Basically im trying to set up backing tracks for my band.
1) Im wondering can anyone show me to a tutorial where i can learn how to set up backing tracks for a band to use live on Ableton Live 5? Im sure there must be one around somewhere. I've had a brief look on this site and on youtube but couldnt find what i want.
2) How do i get the the tempo to change in Ableton per song? Eg. the first song in my set is 140bpm, the next song is 130bpm etc.
Thanks for your help. I cant wait to get to grips with this package!

Hi choice,
welcome to the forums
(damn, too slow)
watch this video for an in depth instruction to set up a click track:

and find some useful general tips in the Tips&Tricks fourm, e.g. here:

I am also quite new to ableton (not to recording) and would like o use it live on stage with a band, so I too try to figure out how the different possibilties.
I think in the video, both the click track and the backing tracks are routed to the master out, hard panned left and right, with no effects on the master bus. then, a apaptor is used to split the stereo signal from the headphone out into to mono signals which are both fed into DI boxes. the click rtack signal is routed to the band/drummer and the backing track signal is routed to the FOH.
I think you could set up different backing tracks with a soundcard with different outputs, each feeding into a DI box
2. I figure the easiest thing to achieve tempo changes is in session view, where you can assign a different tempo to each scene (the horizontal rows of clips); so you set up a couple of audio tracks containing your backing tracks for each song in a horizontal order (calles 'scene'); then, on the right you name each 'scene' and include the tempo like "89 BPM" (p. 89 in the manual); i don't know, if this is possible in Live 5
tempo changes in arrange view are also easy to set up through tempo automation; then one could use all the audio files of the differnet songs and click tracks in a horizontal order as a looong arrangement, automate the tempo for every song and use Locators (p. 76) to jump between the songs or parts of the songs - but I don't know if this would be too complicated
I am also interested, how people do this and what controllers are used or better, how controllers are set up to jump between scenes, trigger clips, maybe alter tempo etc.
or how opinions are on using a hardware sample player....

Could you mix all the backing down to 1 stereo audio file or do you still want to be able to mix the levels?
If you did that all you would have on each scene would be the audio file and a click.
the click could be sent out to any physical out you like if you have a multi out soundcard. just select "Audio to" in the track to select where you want it to go.
each scene can have a tempo assigned to it.
you could midi map the scene selection buttons to foot controllers. or just keys on a keyboard.

Any soundcard with two pairs of stereo outs will do, or a pair of stereo outs and phones out.
With cue enabled and the metrnome on the click track will be sent to the cueing phones channel and you can leave you tracks then to be sent to the master outs to your mixing desk.
Set up your whole live set in one ableton set so each scene moves you through your songs at tempos set up as deascribed above. You then just need someone to trigger the scenes when you need them using a midi foot controller or normal midi controller, if you have someone able and free of hand to do it.
the hardest thing is not setting this up...it's getting your drummer to play along with a click track accurately.

the ideal thing is to have multiple outputs and your songs mixdown into subgroups, allowing FOH to mix in "percussion" or "keys" to taste.
But as long as the mix is pretty even using the stereo file is great for ease of use, and then it's pretty easy to have your whole set in one live file.
If you have the oppurtunity to sound check each song and listen to in FOH then it's great to be able to go back and mix it, but we all know how often that happens. (never)
check out circular logic's intime software if you're drummer is tempo retarded. Also, footswitch is nice to have onstage for cueing up the songs without getting that "i'm checking my email" look with you bendin over the laptop. So check out an FCB1010, or get a cheap USB keyboard and mod it.
