creating an effect like 'phase' in pro tools

Hi everybody!

I was showing a friend of mine a track where I had 2 tracks of vocals singing the same thing. He suggested that I adjust the 'phase' like u can in pro tools so that the 2 audio streams don't clash.

i couldn't find that in ableton and I'm just wondering if there is something like this that makes it so that sound doesn't occupy the same space or clash on the frequencies etc.

Any ideas?

There is a phase reverse button in Live's Utility plug-in.

how do you know when the audio is "clashing" and reversing the phase will fix it?

Is this the case on vocals that are straight doubled, as in harmonies would probably be ok?

Try adding a Simple Delay in a return with no Feedback and 1ms delay. Start increasing the delay time little by little and listen how the sound changes. At some point you'll start causing various phase problems. Listen for those and learn how to recognize them. Most of the time it's easier to do it by eye and zooming in deep into the waveforms or with a phase analysis tool (like soundhack's +phasescope), but as with everything audio, you should first go by your ears.
