I love them. I like all of the old retro synth pioneer stuff, TD, Kraftwerk, Jean Michel Jarre, (Jon and) Vangelis, Space (i.e. Magic Fly), Yellow Magic Orchestra, Kitaro, etc.

And I love the analog synth geniuses of the era, such as Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, etc, etc.

And Billy Currie, John Foxx, Vince Clarke and all of those dudes too.

Man, I loved the late 70's, early 80's synthpop and synth/ambient soundtrack albums etc.

They also got me started in music and the whole synth thing. I might have gotten into them right when what some people would consider their most commercial time but for me it was what made me realize that I could make interesting and somewhat emotional music without a band and more importantly without a singer.

Oh yes, one of my favorite and first experiences with electronic music. I remember when I was a kid, I had a copy of afew of their soundtracks on 12'' and I use to play the hell out of them cause it was like nothing i had ever heard (both my 'rents used to play lots of blues records and such). Their older live stuff is really cool. I've got afew live recordings of it, and sonically its amazing. I even used to have video from one of the shows as well. Kinda cool the way they sonically layer each sound and then hows they kind of solo with it.

but when they went digital it was all bollocks to me.

Of course I smoked a lot of weed in those days, but even now something like Rubycon or Ricochet sounds great to me.

If I could get away with it I'd probably tour just doing tangerine dream riffs over beats.

if youre into Krautrock go look for Amon Düül II, neu!, Guru Guru, Popol Vuh, Ash Ra Tempel, Hoelderlin, the old Kraftwerk stuff before they did too much acid and hided behind their machinery and of course the almighty Can(!)

Yeah, when it started getting away from the moog modular freakouts, and turned into edgar froese leaning on a digital synth for 20mins, with some assorted guitar sounds I kinda lost interest.

Seeing this thread made me dig out my copy out Dark Side of the Moog by klause shulze and Pete Namlook and Bill Laswell - pure brilliance.

My favorite live Tangerine Dream record. Just love that massive 808 drop at the start of the set. Its pretty excellent way to start the concert.

I am not as familiar with all these interesting artists, but I absolutely LOVE Popol Vuh! I discovered them through their soundtracks for Werner Herzog films. A match made in heaven, or Himmel, if you will.

As for Tangerine Dream, one LP I recall really liking was an Edgar Froese solo LP titles 'Epsilon In Malaysian Pale'. I'll have to hunt that one down again.

That's a fantastic piece of music. I loved Tangerine Dream from Phaedra up to the mid-80s when they started selling out and making 5 minute tracks. Le Parc was about the last album I liked. Optical Race and Melrose were the first nails in the coffin. But stuff like Poland, Ricochet, Pergamon, Force Majeure are still utterly fantastic to this day.

Couldn't have put it better myself. Aqua, Macula Transfer and Epsilon in Malaysian Pale by Edgar Froese solo are also well worth checking out.
