OT: Just settled a debt

Like a lot of you I spend way too much time surfing the web looking at gear and eventually adding things to my arsenal that probably aren't justified. The list is long and constantly expanding.

Well today I got a letter from my favorite and long time debt collector offering to settle the debt of $2,600 for $800. Since they've been real persistent over the years tracking my life with absolutely no response from me and I've also been working on fixing my credit I decided it was time to finally reward them (and ultimately myself).

So I decided whatever piece of gear I don't need can wait and I gave them a call. They were in complete shock that somebody was actually calling to pay something off. We shared a few funny stories, I paid them the money, and now it's done.

And I have to say that even though I don't have anything tangible to show for this, I got an even bigger sense of accomplishment and excitement from this than any piece of gear I bought in the last year. After a short enough period of time I will no longer have to worry about this keeping me from purchasing on credit or keeping me from getting an apartment or house.

Potential creditors and landlords were never really impressed with my ownership of a Livid Ohm or MCU.

Great way to start the weekend.

And on to some porn...

Seriously, I look at my gear wish list and try to determine which item would be more pleasing in the immediate future. We've all seen the "should I get this or that" posts on here from people. But when I got this letter I was like "Oh, fuck yeah! This I NEED to do." without hesitation.

Bad credit marks are like herpes, not really keeping you from doing anything but flare up when it's the exact worst time.

Must be a total christmas feeling getting 2600 worth of debt out of the way for 800. Wish the debt collectors in Denmark were that desperate, I'd be stacking up the credit cards foh sho!

Hmmm.... gets me thinking. I've been successfully ignoring a £2500 loan I took out about 7 years ago.

The bank in question accidentally cancelled my direct debit (to them) then sent me a letter demanding the full amount as I had defaulted payment. I argued the case that it was their fault and I couldn't pay the full £2500 and they wouldn;t have it.So I closed my account and I've had no contact with them since.

Pretty sure it's gonna bite me on the arse one day.

Now, pornography....

This debt did happen about 6 or 7 years ago and the messed up thing is it's from a credit card with a $500 limit, but due to a layoff, a breakup, and several moves in the same year I'll just say it wasn't the top of my priorities to take care of and it wasn't the easiest task for them to track me down.

So if you ever wonder what happens when you stop paying a maxed out $500 credit card, several years later it will blossom to at least $2,600 in interest and late fees. I honestly don't know how or when they decided to stop adding charges.

When you're looking at a $2,600 bill that isn't somehow tied to a new Macbook Pro you tend to go see what the new hot softsynth is instead.

I don't know what the laws are in other states or countries but in California a debt is supposed to fall off your record roughly seven years after the last time the company had any contact with you, but there are some loopholes and credit has all kinds of fuzzy areas so I was more than happy paying off a settlement instead of hoping it just disappears.

I'm led to believe it's similar here in the UK. I'm not banking on it though!

Very nice to hear. This was the intention of my "Karma debt" thread before it blew up in my face. I am dealing with the tax man  right now, but I am on the verge or awestruck as to how its panning out 8O :D :D :D

i had a bad credit score also. Defaulted on loans missed payments being late etc etc a general disregard for my own financial welfare. Ended up having a really bad credit rating which resulting in all sorts of differnt hassles as you can imagine.
That was back in 97 ish.
Role on today n. I have a 100 precent clear credit rating and i am very carefull about maintaing that - i reckon youve got to be.
It allows me to buy a house in a relaxed crime free area with the officially the best school in the country two nice cars holidays etc etc.

yes i,m showing off a bit there - but i,m very proud of myself for changing it all around. In fact 5 years ago i was still in quite alot of debt and going nowwhere fast it seemed. It was really only in the last 3-4 years has the situation reversed and i got my head screwed on and with that new philiophy came a big increase in earning potiental which i grasped with both hands.

Get your debt paid off and move forward.

Incidently my wife who i mariied last year also had developed a bad personal financial oulook. I have been coachhing her over the last 3- 4 years being really on her back when its appropriate to get it cleared up and she has just about finished paying them all off. Her credit rating will resume to a non default status next year.

Hope this helps :)
