I used to listen
www.pandora.com which is great, but as I'm in Colombia right now ...I can't do it anymore. I started listening Last.fm and I think is crap...the library is not good...ie. you start listening Techno and then, at some point the music changes to trance or hip hop and so...

...same for artists... random changes in styles.

Same here! I really miss Pandora!
Last.fm imho is crap because as far as I know its songs/playlists are tagged by its users and the majority of them simply lack knowledge or accuracy..
I also got the feeling that Last.fm in the end is nothing but a promotional tool for big companies in the music biz.
You can type in the weirdest artist or genre and after a few similar plays of artists/songs they'll drop in some current major shite..
Or am I getting it wrong?

I love Last.fm. Its made me interested in music again, by letting me listen to things I didn't even know I liked. And I love the way you can press the little information key and find out more about them,

It was like this a couple of years ago, and i kind of gave up on it... but having gone back to it in the past few months i was really surprised just how much it's changed in terms of music that's up there. I guess the more people use it and the longer they do the more a accurate and defined the tagging process will become.

If you hear something you don't like you just push the Ban button. You'll never hear it again. Pandora is lame because you cannot upload your own music on it. What fun is that?
On Last FM you can listen to it a bunch of different ways. You can listen to playlists like someone recommended, you can listen to recommendations from Last FM based on what your tastes are, and you can even listen to your neighbor's playlists, which I think draws data from their iTunes stuff.
You get out of it what you put into it. The more you listen and push the heart button when you hear something you like, and ban stuff you don't like, the better it gets. When the music starts to suck you can just start over and listen to another artist's station. It works on my iPhone now and I love it.

I'd say its pandora that randomly jumps to wildly inappropriate genres. Its a nice experiment in linking musical characteristics but once you start thumbs-downing the really terrible R&B when you asked for tearing jungle the radio play never recovers and it just starts spitting out the wrong tunes.
I have never had this problem with Last.fm.

apparently you can sync playlists with the genres you've been listening to on itunes / your ipod, kinda like the new genius function on itunes
not had a go yet but gonna look into it

Hmm, might be dependent on the station/genre as I have not had that problem.
I liked Pandora overall ... enough to actually pay for it ... except that in certain genres it started to repeat itself. Maybe that's because my taste was too rigid. So I needed to branch out. Their podcast on dance genres is a little embarassing but I realize they had to do it the way they did due to licensing issues...also ridiculous that they had to shut off European feeds due to licensing problems.
It's cool that last.fm lets anyone sign up and upload their music. Pandora is more "invitation only." You can submit your stuff but they may or may not include it in their lists.

If I have a bunch of signed tracks, and put them on Last FM as stream only... is that violating something with the actual label who released it?

probably. but it would be a shame if they would make you problems. I mean, you are doing their job: promoting the music that they want to sell.
