hi,
lets take look with a text editor to your corrupt .als file and compere it to a working one.maybe you find some finder infos inside.i know this prob with reason files.after storing and reopen it the reason file is broken:(
i think it`s a storage prob.the finder stores data inside the .als file.
you can`t do nothing

ahhh one thing you can do...store your sessions as two
seperate files

Hi,
You didn't say what version caused this. I'd like to know to keep an eye out for this possible issue.
Thanks,
Mike

same problem here. I have been working all day long on a song.
After dinner i lounch ableton and it asks for the serial number to unlock it... how is that possible??? Well, i do everything, re set the preferences and all. I try to open the song at voilá the file is corrupt!!!!
This is really frustrating. I have followed the suggestions found here
http://forum.ableton.com//viewtopic.php ... ac8a5c3c66
the first one doesn't work, but i managed to find the file on the crash folder. Is a very old version of it and all the changes seem to be lost forever
i really hate ableton live sometimes.....
by the way i have 7.0.14

Hello,
There might be a few reasons for this behavior:
- you had lot´s of crashes and for some reason Live´s undo history is corrupted.
This usually results in a visible undo.cfg file when Live is closed. The Undo.cfg should be deleted then.
This file resides next to the Preferences.cfg file.
- you have a broken file system or a virus on your computer or
cracked/faulty VST´s
- you save or load a file and the computer crashes while saving or loading.
You can send us your broken .als file. In some cases it can be repaired.
Best,
Christian
p.s.: I personally haven´t experienced this problem in the last 8 years, even not
with any alpha or beta versions. If you have a way to reproduce this, we´d be glad to hear from you

Hi Christian, i have been using ableton live for quite a wile (definitely not 8 yearso tho), and this is the first time i experience this problem.
(Another time i couldn't open a session but it was because of a faulty VST, easy to sort by removing the plug in).
I remember seeing the undo.cfg yesterday while i was looking for the preferences.cfg, but it is not there anymore (i haven't deleted it).
I don't think i have any virus or broken file system because i have copied the als on a flash disk and tried to open it with my laptop (the als was originally on my desktop pc) and still it said the file appers to be corrupted.
My computer crashed twice yesterday, both time right after the save or the export of the wave file. It showed the blue screen of death for a second and then rebooted. After rebooting i opened the file to make sure everything was ok, and it was. But when i turned off Live normally and tried to open my proget it started giving me trouble (with live asking for the serial number and all).
I know this all sounds weird but is excactly what happened to me yesterday.
Anyways, thank you for your reply, i might send you the broken file at least to see if you can figure out what happened and maybe suggest a way to prevent or fix this.
Thanks

it's incredible because the ableton reply are always the same.. and always try to find some user fault to justify a anomaly.
well.. everyone got cracked version of some plug ins.. so with that sentence you made guilty all users which will avoid to post here with the fear to be busted..
but.. when that happened to me.. i got no cracked plug ins. because i had formatted the computer and i use another computer to mix with or produce things.. i use this just for ideas with ableton with its own plug ins.
and i got a mac.. so avoid the virus excuses.
than they conclude with something like.. i never experienced problems like this since i'm using live..
so all ableton users are dumb..
i think a great support has to trust in their users. period.

Hello mattianlaseppia,
I´m not sure if you read my posting thoroughly. I gave possibilities for such
a behavior not conclusions - cracked VST´s and such are just a possibility.
If there´s a way how to intentionally corrupt files with Live, we haven´t found it yet.
I can understand your frustration about a corrupt file very well!
Best,
Christian

hello kleine
i'm not sure you have read my post thoroughly.
if you have NO idea of what you are talking about (because the possibilities you have listed are like today is raining and tomorrow there's the sun.. just guess)
it enough say something like "we don't understand why that happen, is an our fault, and we are working on it, if you want to collaborate with us, it's really appreciated"
live is a GREAT program, probably the best and the most innovative, but there are some things that are FUNDAMENTAL that can't be left with that kind of answers by the ableton support (which i used various times and never been so useful, usually they give the fault to someone other..) that usually gives the responsibility to someone other.
so.. i don't know any other program where you can lose one project because is corrupted (i'm talking on the mac side, probably win is different, but i've used a lot logic, cubase, digital performer, on the mac side)
the midi sync is another one fundamental thing..
and the CPU usage .. very high
i think in general people is asking to improve the stability/functionality VS new features.. i really hope you think more about that in the live 8 version.. i'm still at live 6 for that reason.
btw thanks for your post.

I can not deny that it´s entirely Live´s fault that such things happen.
We´d be happy if someone could demonstrate how to reproduce this.
As i wrote, we have not heard of a way how to corrupt files with Live.
If you find my statement to generic, that´s ok - it might be helpful for others to understand how files *in general* can become corrupted and how filesystems work.
I totally agree with the stability point - this is still above everything else.
Best,
Christian

ok sorry, is a mine misunderstanding.. thanks for your interest and i hope you can find a solution to these things.
after all we are all human..
but the thing that piss me off is that with hardware usually one thing works or not from the beginning and you can change it, while i really hate that a lot of time the new release are "beta version" which at the end becomes more stable, while you have paid cash that has one value.. and all the euros works.. hasn't no bugs..
anyway, thanks, bye
