Anyone use an iPod as an external hard drive?

Just curious, since I see how Apple officially supports Windows now and has a 20gb version. It would be cool to have something to listen to my various waves and edits and also use the same thing for a performance.

i saw someone who installed OSX on an iPod and could boot the machine off it. it got VERY hot with all the disk access. not sure if mp3s are read like wavs from the HD but i think it might be a little taxing. how fast does the HD spin on the iPod?

In the British magazin Sound On Sound there was a couple of months ago a test of several Firewire harddrives with Macs. The iPod was also tested, but what I can remember is that it's performance wasn't that good.

SOS does have a lot of articals... i could not find the ipod/HD one.. can someone post a direct link?

And the ipod usally loads the mp3 into its 32mb of memory to play it... so most of the time the disk is not spining.(this is a good thing)

works fine with os 9, i wouldn't use a ipod with osx as it will burn out the drive. i've been booting off my ipod at work since november! no problems using reason/ableton!
