BCF anguish...

Post by sporkles » Sun Jan 11, 2009 10:43 pm

Okay - hooray, I got a BCF. Windows recognises it, Live sort of recognises, but
neither BCedit nor BCmanager detects it. That is, the latter sometimes detects
it, but when I try to write to the unit, nothing happens. At first, I simply plugged
it in, and Windows recognised it as a generic USB audio device. I could find and
write to it with BCmanager, but decided I wanted it to show up properly in Live,
so I installed the driver. It snow shows up as BCF2000 in Live, and I thought
this would make things smoother, but now I'm completely unable to get it
to work properly.

Any ideas?

I have a BCF and have found that 4 me, it works best in Mackie Control Emulation mode.

In the top section of Live's MIDI preferences page select "Mackie Control" as your control surface, and set the input/Output to BCF2000 port 1. You will have to restart the BCF by turning it off and back on again while holding down the second of the 16 buttons across the top.

The basic functions of Live are a breeze. You also get detailed control over all devices in Live. Read the thread that DJ Synchro posted on this and you'll learn a ton about how this works:

Hope this helps, and once again, props 2 DJ Synchro 4 the thread!!

Thanks for your replies, guys.

djdalecooper: OK, I tried that, but if I move a fader to adjust a channel's volume
in Live, the BCF fader just drops back down to zero (the Live fader stays in the
position where I placed the BCF fader). Surely that's not how it should be?

Meef Chaloin: is there any reason to believe that MidiOX will be able to write
to the BCF, when neither BCedit nor BCmanager will?

Another thing that really bugs me is that after installing the BCF, BCmanager
doesn't detect my BCR (which has been working fine all the time) at all anymore...

Yeah, that's why I said to do it that way. The BC software is shit but you can import/export sysex. Give it a try, MidiOX will work unless you're doing someting wrong or your BCF is faulty somehow. But what you described is normal

Didn't work. It seems nothing is able to write to the BCF now. What a
nightmare. It shows up just fine in Live's preferences - I tried doing a system
dump, but nothing happens. Tried in Reason - if I add it manually, Reason
sees the input, but it's unable to auto detect it.

And it seems that the preset I *did* manage to upload to the BCF before
everything stopped working has disabled all the "store ... preset" buttons, so
I can't even restore the factory default. Does anyone know if there is a more
exhaustive list of buttons you can press when booting up the unit? (Pressing
and holding button no. 2 from the top left while starting it sets it to MC_C
(Mackie mode, but are there other options, such as a "wipe and restore
system" or something to that effect?

Okaaaay, so I plugged the BCF into a different USB port, without using
Behringer's driver (makes the BCF show up as a generic USB audio unit in Live),
and voila - it's working. I don't know if the culprit was Behringer's driver (which
admittedly has been working fine with my BCR for ages) or if it was the USB
hub I had the unit connected via previously, but at least it's working now! I was
able to upload my custom Mackie preset with BCmanager. :D

EDIT: I'm beginning to suspect the driver; I downloaded the latest driver from
the Behringer website, and figured that I might as well update the BCR also,
but now BCmanager doesn't detect it anymore...
