C'mon Abes. Give us some idea of what MFL will cost. I need to know how much money I have to set aside.

I'm thinking it's got to be 'lots' eh?
MfL is essentially Max, Msp and Jitter, which to a normal punter buying Max5 costs costs $699 in americreds

It can't be very much less than that can it?
I really have no idea here.
I'm guessing, er, $599 ?

noooooh, can't be that much, can it? it's not like you can use it with anything else other than Live. $149, more like. Then EVERYone will buy it without a thought, just to get the step sequencer, etc., rather than just a handful of dweebs.

Uhhh...how about included as part of the Live 8 package price seeing as it is the only real significanyt part of the upgrade apart from several "performance enhancements" ?

I'm going to say $199 - $249.

I'm assuming that Ableton is viewing it like all of their other paid devices (Operator, Sampler, etc.), which are all $159, but with the added bonus that it can basically be anything, thus an extra charge.

When I saw the video on the step sequencer I thought how is that any different than Live's piano roll? I may be a big baby here but when I think of step sequencer I think of well divided and outlined boxes. It's fine when your notes (or whatever) are close to the left but if you have a lot of tones and start getting past 2 quarter notes out I can't tell what the hell I am dropping on what. It all blends together.

I reckon the reason they haven't said anything yet is simply because they haven't decided and are waiting to see what the feedback is like (and the likely level of sales). Ableton and Cycling '74 staff have posted comments suggesting it won't be that expensive and won't break the bank, though that could mean anything.

I'm guessing there is a chance it could be real cheap, due to the likely level of sales - Max has been a pretty specialist product until now but the Live integration will take it mainstream which means lots of sales and potentially a far lower cost. If they price it as say $500 they ain't going to sell many copies, but if they price it at say $200-$250 they will sell shit loads which will more than offset the lower price.

Longer term, I'm wondering if Max/MSP will in effect end up as an instrument / plugin solely for Live. The Cycling '74 staff seem to have a real buzz about the tie-up, as if they're coming home to where they've always wanted to be - will there be any real need for a stand alone version?

I could be talking total shit though.

Max = one company
Ableton = 1

Both need to profit from it.


Most stuff in the 149 range, are tools developed by the ablteton team itself right?
So this time i would not be surprised that the price would be a little higher as "normal"

I just can't imagine that.
I think Max gets used for a lot of projects that are not related to audio, such as robotics. It has a real academic strand of users for whom a complete incorporation would make no sense whatsoever.

I say all this as if I know anything, which I don't.
I have only been able to install their demo once, and was immediately busy with work and it timed out before I got to 'tutorial 4' .
Ever since then I have not even been able to open the damn thing due to their weird demo policy. All I know about Max is from pictures on the net!

I think they don't like people trying their product.
we might want to buy it or something.

Not gonna happen. It goes against the entire design philosophy of Max for it to be limited to one sequencing host. The fact that it will be an option is a great thing, but don't expect Max proper to go anywhere.
