I have a macbook pro and I'm thinking about switching to windows. Not for the OS but to save money perhaps. I was wondering what everyone's using and looking for recommendations for solid live performing machines? Any suggestions?

I also kind of curious if anyone knows how using a touchscreen laptop such as:

is for performing/editing...with "Live" anyone have any experience with this or something similar?

Hm. I'm a bit of a noob, but I'm running a DEL XPS-1530 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 320Gb HDD with Vista and, aside from a bunch of VSTs playing up in Vista (eg. NI Akoustik Piano and Gforce Imposcar) it runs quite nicely. I could always use a bigger Hard Disk though. Even at 320Gb, I'm running out of bloody space!

Lenovo thinkpads...

Lenovo Thinkpad T Series is definetly one of the best Windows Laptop Options.
Great build Quality, GREAT Warranty and great performance.
Plus: You can get them with XP !!!

The downside is, they are expensive, so that you will be in a similar pricerange as Apple.

I never liked dell, but a friend of mine got a Laptop from their buisness line, and this one
is REALLY nice.

I would ALWAYS buy a PC online somewhere where i can return it for a full refund.
Then test it with my configuration and if it doesn t run smooth - don t tinker around too
much, just return it and try the next one.

P.S. if you look at lenovo prices, keep in mind that they already include a 3 year warranty
similar to Applecare.

What about Sony? You can get a great deal, they just lost 4 billion dollars.

overrated: dell, sony

I highly recommend the Dell D630. It's built like a tank, and the 6xx series has been used for business use for years, so it's rock solid. The screen is small, but you can configure it with a video card and attach a much bigger external monitor for home/studio use, and then use the smaller screen for live gigs.

I've used this platform for years, and it's rock solid!!

Dells are by far the best bang for the buck, with the next day on site warranty, it doesnt matter if it breaks, which they rarely do anyway. IBMs are way overpriced, Toshibas are renowned for being fragile. MSIs do a good box. Sony Vaios are great, but cost as much as a Macbook Pro, and the Apple is a better buy for the money.
