OK, so i got forwarded this link to this artist in residence in vancouver at the bottanical gardens and although she has done some cool stuff in the past, the centrepiece of her artist residency appears to be a direct un-credited bite of Andy Goldsworthy.

I was shocked that such blatant plagiarism was getting government money, and even more shocked that many people seemed to be unaware of the geeeeeenius that is Andy Goldsworthy.

I looove Andy Goldsworthy. His art has had a huge impact on me in a fundamental way, along with John Cage's Silence.

I actually liked him a bit less after watching Rivers & Tides.... I much prefer what I get from looking through his book A Collaboration with Nature.

One thing I like the most is that most of his works are made using only the materials immediately around him.....dirt, leaves, ice, spit, etc. I try to apply the same philosophy to selecting samples....I never have far to look.

Definitely my favorite artist!

Not sure about the plagarism,
His work is great but I think that the ideas aren't exactly original really, geometric forms in nature, havent they been rocking that in Asia for millenia?

Robert Smithson did a very similar thing in 1970 (Spiral Jetty, which still exists in Utah). He is considered the originator of "earthwork". So one could consider Goldsworthy's piece a bite as well.

Sometimes artists, using existing works as inspiration and as a starting point, move in very small steps forward. This can certainly be seen in music as well, especially in this postmodern era where everything has been "done" already.

Good to know about Smithson. Goldworthy's work is so primal, I had figured it's been done countless times down through the ages. Bringing order to nature. I think Goldsworthy is particularly well done though, although I also recognize that I have never actually seen any of Andy Goldsworthy's work. I've only ever seen photographs, which is not the same thing. My perception of Andy Goldsworthy's work is definitely shaped by those photos, and when I saw the Rivers & Tides video and actually saw Andy, a bit of the mystery and awe was lost.

Rivers and Tides is a must see IMHO. It's also worth checking the sound design...

Goldsworthy is one of my favorite artists, definitely.

are there any better quality links for the documentary I don't know if it's my screen or what but it looks very blurry, i'd love to see it clearly

and as for andy goldsworthy ripping off spiral jetty, that's absurd. the only similarity is the spiral shape. when your work is that simple it's bound to use the same shapes as others. when you see the spiral thing in rivers and tides it's totally different (and totally impermanent). to say he ripped off spiral jetty is just silly. it's like saying anyone who paints a circle with a brush is a biter...
