midi shows up on channel input
but doesn't show on device's 'midi to'

I'm not sure if I understand what you mean.
You mean the MIDI meter in the chooser shows that MIDI is sent but the MIDI device would not receive it?

Can you still reproduce that with Live 8.0b14?
