Win2K: .als icons become generic after removing Live 2.0.3

For a long time I've had 2.0.3 on my system. I finally realized there's no point in keeping it since I have been using 3.0.1 for months and it's been as solid as a rock...
After I removed 2.0.3, weirdly, all my .als files now have a generic Windows document icon. I went to Folder Options>File Types and tried to fix it there. It shows the Live icon in the dialog window but the desktop doesn't show it. Clicking on a .als still opens the session in Live 3, it's just that the icons are wrong. The .asd files still show the Live icon.
I have browsed the web and MS support sites and there are a couple of recommendations: delete the invisible ShellIconCache file and restart, or change the display bit depth and change it back. I haven't been able to try these yet, but until I do I thought I'd throw this question out to see if anyone on W2K or XP has seen a similar problem.
