[rsu] 8b11: Alt-Tab between program problem

Post by debu » Wed Feb 18, 2009 5:52 am

On my win machine alt-tabbing from xplorer2 to Live causes audio to quit and re-analyze mp3 files (that were already warped and saved)

Does this from Firefox as well, so it's not program specific.

XP service pack 3
1800mhz thinkpad 2 gig ram winxp sp3
44 Hz 24 bit

This just happened to me again with b19. A set was playing, I went to xplorer2 grabbed an mp3 from a directory alt+tabbed to go back to Live, audio stopped plus all files in session started reanalyzing.

just double checked and it's doing alt-tabbing from Live to Firefox as well.

Debu,

could you please have a look at the following dates/time:

- the modification date/time of the mp3 files
- the creation/modification date/time of the asd files
- the decoded file in the cache folder (see in prefs->File/Folder)
- the computers clock

and tell me what their relation is? I just want to figure out
what the reason for the reanalysis might be.

Thank you very much!

Hi Ralf, the problem is I was just randomly adding mp3's that aren't in my usual set. I've installed b20 and haven't had this problem yet. If it happens again I'll re-post in here what you needed. Thanks for being on top of it. D

Re: [rsu] RC1 : Alt-Tab between program problem

I'm having the same re-analysis and 5second audio dropouts in RC1 when alt-tabbing. It's a huge issue to me since I often drag mp3's from an external explorer program (xplorer2) due to an eye condition that prevents me from being able to see the live browser as well as I'd like to in a studio situation let alone on a dark stage.

Hi Bowchikabowbow,

thank for taking the time to look at the mod dates.
They are OK and obviously saved as they should.

If you say audio stops - is the song stopped
and you need to restart it, or is it a dropout
until the files are redecoded?

I tried to trick around with Live to reproduce
the issue, but couldn't (on Vista). So you say you have
mp3 samples which you decoded and saved a while ago,
which do play, and on Alt-Tabbing they are redecoded
(the waveform completely rebuilding or getting from gray
to black - which means reanalysing?). At which moment
exactly does it stop playing, when you Alt-Tab away, or
when you Alt-Tab back to Live, or when you drop the new
sample into Live?

I see that the cache files are all recreated at the
same second. Hmmm, something with the cache? I see no
possible correlation with cache full or cache unwriteable
or something like that.

One more question: when you originally dropped the files
into Live, or opened the set, did they redecode?

OK, I have no idea at the moment, maybe some of your answers
will help.

Thanks alot!
Ralf

Hi, I actually sent you a pm about it:
"I figured out the problem was a Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1.5TB that I'd recently purchased to "occasionally" connect and back up files. I'd inadvertently left this drive attached and eventually realized that it goes into some kind of sleep mode, which then causes the system to hang and re-analyze files when alt-tabbing back to Live. I only had it connected a few times and that was the reason the problem wasn't consistent"

I should have updated the thread, but went out of town and forgot about the thread. You can go ahead and close the bug. Thanks for looking into it.

Thank you very much for the information. It will be
invaluable should another user have such a problem.

Probably I should make some experiments to further
analyse the issue. Did you use mp3 files from that drive
or is it just the delay in the kernel of the drive spin up?

Thanks again for figuring it out.

Hi, no mp3's from the drive were used, it does just cause a system/kernel delay when attached. The drive is a Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1.5TB should anyone else do a search and run into the same problem. There may be a setting to fix this sleep mode, but I haven't researched that yet. thanks again, D
