The idea is growing on me more and more, especially after watching all the vids out now and finding out more about it on the NI forum.

I find it so cool that you can have anything on a single pad, including melodic instruments with pitched sequences (Each pad can have it's own piano roll), or a sliced loop on a single pad.

And with group tracks it'll be great to send maschine's 8 outputs to 8 tracks, grouped and then use Live's sends and levels for those in the group.

It just looks like so much fun fro production and I think it would be great live alongside the APC40. One dedicated to Rhythm, one to melodic.

Damn, this year's NAMM sucker punched me more than ever...

I'm right there with you but don't have the scrill at the moment and there's the wild card of the APC40, Live 8, and M4L. But I'm sure it might be an addition in the next 6 months.

I'm still waiting for the user reviews to pour in. I'm aware of it's feature shortcomings but frankly don't give a damn.

It does look pretty cool to build beats on the fly. I guess you can also use the the controller with drumracks or anything else.

Wish I download the manual to see what it all does.

It's also been mentioned that most of it's known shortcomings other than it not being hardware stand alone could easily be fixed/changed in a software update.

i want it to.

I need to sell my 909 if i want that and the apc40
I never use the 909 anymore and sampled the poop outta it.

should I sell it or keep it, the thing is the 909 will go up in value while whatever i get will go down. honestly i haven't plugged the thing in for over three years no. you only get so much milage out of those sounds....

opinions on selling the 909 to satisfy my current gas???

to me this is the advantage of the thing and not a short coming

i have Maschine, it's great as a standalone product (and i mean really great).
but to be honest, it sucks as a plugin: it's very heavy on the CPU, the only way you can control it is sending program changes that will launch a whole scene (which are too high level, they include patterns and groups), nothing you do on the device will get recorded into Live (mutes, solo, knob action), so you basically have to program your whole track on maschine to have something happen in live. (for instance, it appears in Live as an unfoldable device, there's no automation parameter available at all). and you have to program all the PCs by hand, they don't get recorded when you play them from Maschine.

BUT: the library is great, it works wonderfully as a midi controller (you can even use the pads to send "dynamic" CCs), and it's very very cool as a standalone product.
just don't expect too much using it within Live.

Ya, I'll definitely have to sell off a couple things. And I think I'll wait on Max4Live rather than getting it straight away. I was planning on, and I'm sure I'll pick it up at some point, but I think I'll put maschine first.

At first, the dealbreaker for me was that there are no macro controls, so you can't control parameters of multiple sounds or effects at the same time. But then when I thought of using the multiple outputs to tracks in Live, I reckoned that would prvode plenty of simultaneous control using Live's sends and per channel effects in addition to the stuff in maschine. Best of both worlds.

And ya, when you look at Kore 1 vs Kore 2, I'm pretty sure the software will improve substantially based on user requests.

Beat making is actually the thing that has been the least enjoyable for me for the past couple years. I love tweaking and playing synths/keyboard instruments and programming patches, but beats turned into more of work that fun for me. I think if I went back to the groovebox way of working it would get more enjoyable again, especially using it like a roland style step sequencer with the lighted pads.

doc, as far as selling the 909, I can't give advice on selling a classic item, as it might have emotional value. But I'm not sure I'd be keeping it around if I hadn't used it in years. In fact I know I wouldn't.

If you sell your 909 to buy maschine you are simply not playing with a full deck.

Why not just save up $599 and buy maschine and KEEP the 909? Also, why is the 909 sitting around collecting dust if you want a drum machine? Thats the ultimate drum machine and anything is just trying to duplicate that box.

To each their own but I wouldn't be shopping for a drum maschine if I had THE drum machine.

909 doesn't easily function as a live real time step sequencer.
I'v had it for years. I used to use it.. you only get so much milage out of the same sounds.

no emotional value. it was fun for a while. I will not sell the 303, i still rock that one.
I've had a boat load of drum machines over the years.

got my R-70 in '92 .. not sure if I could sell that one.

I wondered about that. Thanks for that post. That totally killed my gearlust for Maschine.

I've been following the NI Maschine forum and learning as much as I can. Still on the fence about it though; some things are awesome, some things - especially with its daw integration - are not so good. At first I thought this would be the answer to my MPC lust, but now I'm not so sure.

I'm with you on that and as great as drum racks are I find Live's piano roll unappealing for drum programming and session clips not too useful for less than 1 bar breakdowns or one shots. Of course other step sequencers don't really have an answer for this either but it's mainly the piano roll that turns me off.

It would be nice if Live or any other step sequencer for that matter would allow you to play a layer on top of the already playing pattern without stopping it to add something like a crash or short drum roll. So you would have your collection of main patterns and then sub patterns with just those little variances.

I've come to the realization that the only thing that will kill MPC lust is a MPC!

I'm just not real happy with what Akai has done with the 5000. OS2 was just released, but I've already read of users having issues with it. Also, why did they take a step back from the 4000 on some of the specs?

I'm completely finished with the thought of BPM and Maschine, but I'm still on the fence about buying a MPC 5000. I actually want to wait and see if they plan on releasing a new one (6000 maybe?) in the next couple of years, or are they just going to add a few new OS's to the 5000.

I own a 3000, and nothing really compares to that hands on, instant workflow.
