[5218] mpc 16 swing 75 is incorrect

Post by paradiddle » Sun Mar 01, 2009 6:49 pm

If you put a row of 16th note, you'll notice around beat 1.3.4 that the beat isn't swung. Already sent an e-mail to beta but I guess they didn't see it.

i can confirm this - see pics...

before 'commit':
you can hear the on/off swung notes sounding wrong
Image

after 'commit':
you can see the notes out of place, and with uneven lengths

when looking at the actual groove file in a midi clip slot to check the note timings, all looks fine.

Thanks for checking it out but it's not the one I'm talking about. (you're using the double preset) I'm talking about the last one at the bottom. mpc swing 16 75. Do the same thing you did and listen at 1.3.4.

I think the one you mentioned is suppose to sound like that but the one I mentioned is suppose to be a constant stream of swung 16th note rhythm just like the other presets in the mpc swing 16 category.

yep, i get that timing glitch with the groove you mentioned, but the one i mentioned is also goosed.
the grooves that have timing glitches here are the 'MPC 16 75' ones

MPC 16 Swing-75
MPC 16 Funker-75
MPC 16 Double Down-75
MPC 16 Double Up-75 (doesn't swing at all)

Yeah you're right. I though the others were meant to sound like that but If you compare with the others of the same category, it doesn't really match up.

mpc 16 double up 70 also.

The swing engine is drunk.

edit: Also found something else. I tried it with eight notes and mpc 8 swing 74 just plays straight 8ths.

Not sure but SP1200 16 swing 50 seems a bit odd. Only certain parts of the parts of the beat are lightly quantized ???

Hi,

I just checked the plain groove files and most of them seem fine. You can drag a groove file from the browser onto an empty MIDI track to look at the swing grid that is stored inside the groove file.

When applying the MPC 16 Swing 75, the groove engine seems to choke on some notes. We'll keep investigating. In the meantime, when reporting these issues, it would help us if you could doublecheck if the problem is inside the groove file or only when applying the groove.

Thanks,
Daniel

i checked this for all the problematic grooves, and all looked fine when dropped into a midi track.
from my first post:

you only hear the problem when the groove is applied to a clip, and you can see that problem when you 'commit' (see above pic)

Yup it's the same for me. It's only when applied to a clip.

daniel, i just sent over an example project to beta@ableton.com
hopefully it should illustrate the problem with the -75 grooves a bit more clearly!
project created with b20, btw

just saw that this is now listed as a fixed bug in b24, but it's still not working correctly here (b24).

MPC 16 Swing-75 works correctly now, but the 3 other -75 grooves are still borked:

MPC 16 Double Down-75
MPC 16 Double Up-75
MPC 16 Funker-75

Hi,

The choking in the MPC 16 Swing has been fixed.

The 3 remaining grooves don't work with Live's groove engine. The (swung) 16th note in the groove file is too close to the next downbeat and therefore not reliably recognized as a swung note.

In order to get a stronger 16th-swing, use the "MPC 16 xxx-70" Groove and increase the Groove Amount to 130%.

The next Beta Library will update all MPC grooves and remove the 3 files that don't work.

Best,
Daniel
