Those not beta testing-post thoughts re: new workflow change
I'm trying to guage the number of people who like and the number who dislike this change revealed in Live 8.
As of 8, the FOLD button in midi clips no longer just shows you the notes in the clip as it used. It now reads all the notes you've used for every clip, in session view & arrange view, and displays them as blank notes in your clip.
This is a clip where I have done a bunch of noodling around in session view, before settling on a simple pattern in arrange view. As you can see, I now get all the empty notes displaying as well because at one point I used those notes somewhere in a midi clip in that channel.
I feel this kind of goes against the whole principle of having separated clips where all of their properties are totally segregated from other clips. Now changes you make to other clips affect all your other ones as far as fold is concerned.
If you are for or against this move, please post in this thread so the dev's know what the general consensus is.
So far, the majority want to change it back, or have a 3 way fold switch which would take into account global notes, or clip only notes.
Here's the thread in the beta forum-> http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=108992

but I did do a bug report it in that thread, and Abletoners say it does work. This is the 'new' way it works.

though I can see why its useful, alot of times I have many sketch clips who don't play any role (yet) in the set..
but they affect the clips I do use..
another argument for a pref option is that I mainly use session to store those sketch clips..
but even my actual used clips in arrange show the notes used in session.. that's not very useful for me, unles I have the option..
but what's really really really bothering me is that in alot of cases I now have to scroll in the MIDI editor because it uses all used notes for that track..
because when the MIDI editor is at its smallest height, it can only show 8 note lanes.. thats not good..

I dunno, doesn't really bother me. It kind of actually makes sense.
Sometimes I use an external instrument that only responds to certain notes. The fold function is pretty handy. You could make a dummy clip containing all the notes you need for that channel/instrument, and then whenever you create a new clip, it's already folded and ready to go. Seems kinda handy. A context menu option to de/activate it in each channel would be pretty slick though.

i dont like it.. and i dont understand why they changed it
if i have a bunch of midi clips loaded up in one track and i have a bunch of key changes then it makes the fold function useless.

Correct, that's my thoughts and workflow as well. It really urks me having to scroll the piano roll down 15 notes to see the one donk I've got programmed in at the very bottombosonHavoc wrote:i dont like it.. and i dont understand why they changed it

Yeah, this is a real pain too. Live 8 has so many cool new features....
...and so many ass-backwards changes to previous features.

I hadn't seen that yet. The old way is much better.
This should be called unfold, and have it's own button.

What? Don't like the idea either. Bring back the old way!
Re: Those not beta testing-post thoughts re: new workflow change
I actually think it is useful, but I would like to see it as a separate fold option..
Both ways have their uses.
