From the 'Does humor belong in music' DVD, I thoroughly recommend it.

Zappa is one of the very few artists I would actually call genius.
And smart as hell....

His live shows were outstanding. Great stage presence and unbelievably tight, inspired musicianship from all the Mothers.

In my opinion

+1
His bio "The Real Frank Zappa" is a fascinating read & highly recommended. There are many misconceptions about Frank & interestingly he was never a drug taker. Very irreverent & eccentric. Musicians who worked with him over the years have commented on Frank's ability to be productive at all times, not one to waste time, when waiting for a flight, he could often be found sitting in the airport transit lounge & writing scores for an orchestra. They also commented that Frank had perfect pitch.

....and after reading that, go and buy yourself "Frank Zappa and the negative dialectics of poodle play" Great book! More insight into Franks 'conceptual continuity'. It's focused more on his music and his way of thinking behind it....
btw: 'The Helsinki Concert' and 'Roxy & Elsewhere' showcase the best Live band that ever existed...
regards

one of a kind legend, amazing person. I saw the tour Dweezil did, "Zappa Does Zappa." Dweezil sat in for his dad, Bozio and most of the rest of the band was there. the highlight was when they played concert footage of Frank playing a solo with just his raw audio and the band played along with it, the closest thing to Frank playing live today.
great stuff but not my cup of tea. he didn't do drugs but he did fire people for doing them.

Zappa was a genius of the tallest order. Everything I have read in this thread quickly sparks my every so often recognition and reaffirmation of his amazing self. As a musician and a person, Zappa will always be a one of kind super id. Honestly, I can't state that I listen to FZ too often these days, but during the 70s and 80s I listened to him frequently.
For me personally, I don't think Frank ever burned out or stopped being insanely creative, but I also don't think that he ever surpassed what he did in the 70s. The tight, well constructed musical fusion, mixed with his humorous animated sub culture folk story approach, was all a legend and legacy could ever hope for.
Viva la Zappa!
PS. nice to see you on here bosonHavoc. Since hearing a slight sample of your creative output on whatever that other forum was last year, I can well understand your appreciation for FZ.

Someone the other day was telling me he is currently the most performed American composer. That's righteous!
