Korg NanoKontrol + LIve = Takeover problem?

Hi guys.
Takeover mode aint working like it should with my KNK.

When I change a mapped parameter with the mouse, it works perfectly.

However, if I change banks ("scenes") on the NanoKontrol, when I come back to my mapped knob, I get parameter jumps in Live, even when takeover mode is on.

Can anyone else confirm they are having this same issue. Is this a bug?
I love my NanoKontrol, but this problem means I'm not able to use banks of knobs or sliders for live use.

Thanks.

This is an issue with Live, NOT the nanoKontrol. There's few good threads about this. Basically the folks at Ableton never intended for Takeover mode to work past the first scene change. 8O

However, the APC WILL support continuous takeover mode. lol.

Wow that's very disappointing. I hope it gets fixed.

Does this mean there is less chance of getting it fixed for generic controllers, in order to sell more APCs? This would be very cynical.

lol. Not sure. I asked the continuous takeover mode question in the APC thread, and Jesse responded that it will be possible - which is great because otherwise scene changes are worthless.

Though scene changes are worthless now with any other controller. That's why I bought 2 nanoKontrols. I have all the faders I need and don't have to worry about the dreaded lack of continuous takeover mode.

:D

Whats the point having banks of controls if you cant use them?

Ableton need to address this issue.

Yeah, I'm still not convinced this isn't just a bug affecting a few specific controllers for some reason. It's always worked fine for me.

Hi all,

let me just start by saying that we would like takeover to work
with all controllers. However, if controllers do internal
bank switching (like the scenes on the nanoKontrol), it's not
that easy.

In general, Live only knows the MIDI messages and does the
takeover on a per-CC-basis. If you switch to a different scene
on the nanoKontrol, the same faders now represent different CCs.

If you tweak fader A on scene 2 (sending CC #y), switch back to
scene 1, and tweak fader A again (now sending CC #x again), it
looks to Live as if you had just made a fast change to CC #x.

I hope this helps to clarify the problem.

cheers,
Jan

Thanks Jan. Forgive my ignorance, but for those who have controllers in which changing scenes/banks DOES work with the faders in takeover mode, how is it being handled in Live as compared with the CCs of the nanos and other non-working controllers?

If you are talking about, for example, the Mackie or the RemoteSL the answer
is simple: in those cases, Live handles the bank changes instead of the
controller; that means that the faders and knobs always send the same CC.

Jan

Yes it does, and thank you for taking the time to post.

The BIG question now is, can/will this be solved?
I say "BIG" because the answer to that question may be a deal breaker for people deciding on what controller to buy for live use.

Even a vague answer to that question would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

Now that the nanokontrols are so widespread among Ableton users i think there's a good change that this problem will be fixed. By the way, how do you guys handle the transport buttons? In momentary mode two start commands are sent, one by pressing, one by letting off the button. In toggle mode you need to press the button twice. Is this how it sould be...?

I think the transport controls can be used in combination with a userconfig file. Theres a thread about it here somewhere.

Have you guys seen the template created by nativeKONTROL?

Looks to be pretty cool. I think they may have found a way to overcome the takeover/pickup issue, but I'm not 100% certain. Check out the vid. They are using the same faders/knobs for different controls in different scenes. Doesn't exactly say, once you flip back to a previous scene, if takeover/pickup would work properly. Seems like it would. For the money, it should, lol.

Gotta send them an email and check.
