Live 4.01 STILL freezes when configuring Multiface in OS9

Hi,

I posted this bug several times during the beta process with various versions. It was assigned to various Abletons but I never saw any feedback as to if you (Ableton) were able to reproduce it. A couple of other users also had the problem with other RME cards under OS9.

As requested I sent the log to Alex - did he receive it OK?

The bug is: Live freezes when configuring more than 2 outputs on the RME Multiface. I have tried re-installing the RME drivers and updated the firmware on the Hammerfall Cardbus card to no avail.

Are you able to confirm if this is a Live problem or an RME problem?

I am sorry to keep nagging about this, but Live is not currently useable with multiple outputs with the RME under OS9. It is not feasable for me to run OSX _yet_ as my audio system. In 6 months perhaps, but we need to get this OS9 issue sorted out now.

The Bug was detailed in these threads:

The bug is as follows:

1 Start Live 4.01

2 select preferences / audio / output config

3 enable any additional output pair: eg Output 3 4 Stereo

4 click OK to leave Output Config, live freezes - hard reboot required

Enabling additional INPUTS works fine and does not cause Live to hang.

Please, Ableton could you give us some feedback on this issue.

Thanks in advance

Yes, I agree with you.
I have to use OS9 because MetaSynth doesn't work in OSX at the moment !
Please, Ableton, do something ! I will buy the v4 as soon as this bug will be solved...
Best,
Philippe

By way of process of elimination....I can say that this problem does not occur when configuring outputs with MOTU 2408 Mk II and OS 9.

Hope that helps a little bit.........

hey paddy....why?

just asking because my minimum machine (400MHz TIBook / 640MB Ram) is smaller than yours and it runs OSX + Live no worries...

Ben-

Because I get more tracks out of Live under OS9 (talking 20 or more)
some VSTs [NOT cracks!] I use on stage aren't yet available in VST-X or AU's, and well, I TRUST OS9 in a gig situation and if anything DOES go wrong, I know what to do.

Yeah I know OSX is the future, but OS9 is what I'm using now, Ableton are still supporting OS9 and it SHOULD work.

cheers
paddy

hi,

i'm the one complaining about L4b12 OS9 (and now 4.0.1 demo, too) freezing up my G4 1Ghz TiBook whenever eye try to stop recording an audio track or slot.... upgrading to L4 from L3 won't happen til this is solved.

perhaps the problem <clasping hands> is that i was trying to use ASIO sound manager instead of a good ASIO device like me MOTU 828mkI ... which is 45 miles away from me at the moment... but has never let me down<wahhhh> it's the first thing i'm gonna try when i get back to the studio....

i emailed ableton support yesterday & haven't heard back from them yet <sniff> no reply to my forum posts about my prob either - guess no one knows what to say....

...... I had this problem allready with Version 3 and I solved it by making a new system extension set with only music-needed extensions. After that it worked great! I haven't found out which ext. exactly caused the crash (I was too lazy - though I had this helper-prog. I forgot the name of). Try this and let us know if it helped :?:

As it turns out my earlier post above is wrong !!

I have exactly the same problem with configuring the Outputs with my MOTU 2408 Mk II as Paddy describes with his RME. Upon reflection I realised that I had only configured the Inputs with the 4.0 betas which, as Paddy says, does not cause a problem.

I am now using 4.01.

Strangely, at first it seemed that the only outputs that caused the feeze were 3/4 because I could select 5/6 and 7/8 and it seemed OK, as long as I didn't select 3/4.

Then it seemed that if 1/2 were not selected that 3/4 could be selected.

Anyway, after experimenting with combinations and about 10 freezes and hard reboots it seems that any selection now causes the freeze.

Obviously this is a major bug for which there is no work-around and requires a fix.

Cheers

Hi folks,

just a short statement. We are aware of this problem, but still have to investigate it more. Unfortunately is the debugging on OS 9 much more difficult as on OS X so it will need some time.

Personally, I don't think that this problem is related to a special driver but as I already wrote, it needs more investigation.

A good help would be if everybody having this problem could send me the log file of Live ("...\Preferences\Ableton\Live 4.0.1\Log.txt"").

regards,
Alex

Do you mean just send the log file "now" Alex or make Live freeze again by selecting Outputs and then send the log file?

Sorry if its a dumb question but I'm not sure which log file you want ?

Hi Murry,

sorry, no not at all a dumb question.
The best is to get this freeze again and then send me the log file. So I know the last run of Live recorded in the log file was the one with the freeze.

Alex

Ok Alex.

I have booted Live, caused the freeze by selecting extra outputs and have just emailed you the Log.txt file as an attachment.

Cheers
